Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani and Anupam Kher starrer Uunchai had been released this Friday. Expecting a good response from critics, the business of the film started off on a strong note when it collected Rs. 1.81 cr., which went well beyond the producers’ expectations for its opening day (Rs.1.80 cr.). On Saturday though, things began looking up for the film as it garnered favourable reviews from viewers too – earning them nearly 100% more than what they earned yesterday – bringing in another Rs. 3.64 crore making their two-day total come to about Rs. 5 crore approximately ($721,000).
Surprisingly, despite a rather marginal distribution across only 483 screens with major cities hosting four films per day, Uunchai has done well enough to open strongly. The jump in earnings on Saturday is indicative of the film being a significant contender at the international box office. Faced with high demands from audiences around the country – or even world – the makers of this film took it upon themselves to distribute it sparingly, and it seems as though their decision may have been worth it after all.
As of Day 3 morning and early afternoon shows, Uunchai has exceeded all expectations by crossing the 5 crore mark. With an evening and night show still remaining, there is a high possibility that by Monday morning it will have exceeded Rs. 6 crore. Speaking about its success thus far, many theaters across India have been requesting for additional screenings for this weekend due to high demand for ticket sales. The film which opened last Friday stands an excellent chance at becoming one of the highest grossing Tamil films in recent times.
