The Sooraj Barjatya directed Uunchai has proven to be one of the top openings for Amitabh Bachchan in recent times, grossing an estimated amount between Rs. 1.65 to 2.05 crores on its opening day (roughly $2790- 3480 USD). Though only released in 483 theaters nationwide, it was still able to outshine other films with larger releases which mostly targeted multiplexes. A large credit for this goes back to the anticipation among fans about him working together with Sooraj Barjatya for the first time – who previously had only worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol when he made Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..
Uunchai has had great success in all three major theaters so far with earnings of Rs. 1.20 crore, and previews are already showing a moderate uptick starting tomorrow. Word-of-mouth among audiences seems to be moderately positive so far and if early feedback is any indication, the film stands a good chance of having the same success on Monday as it did on Friday. Uunchai may see an increase at the weekends but we’ll have to wait until Sunday night to see what kind of increase there will be, whether or not it’s going to stay steady through next week or decline steadily once people grow tired of it this week. Sooraj Barjatya films in the past started out slow but gained momentum thanks to audience word-of-mouth; hopefully Uunchai does too.
There is an acceptable opening for the movie and one of the most notable contributions came from families who are loyal supporters. It would be interesting to see how this will turn out for next week because if these family members show up – then we might actually have a winner on our hands here!
