राम सीता और लक्ष्मण का वनवास
राजा दशरथ ने अपने पुत्र राम को वनवास दे दिया था। राम के साथ सीता और लक्ष्मण भी वनवास काट रहे थे। वे एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान जाते रहते थे। ऋषि मुनियों की सेवा करते। राक्षसों, असुरो से उनकी रक्षा करते।
एक वन से दूसरे वन में घूमते हुए राम लक्ष्मण और सीता पंचवटी नामक स्थान पर पहुंच गये। यह उत्थान उन्हें अत्यंत प्रिय लगा और उन्होंने वनवास के अंतिम वर्षों में यहीं पर रहने का निश्चय किया। पंचवटी स्थान गोदावरी नदी के तट पर स्तिथ है। यहाँ पर राम लक्ष्मण और सीता एक कुटिया बनाकर रहने लगे

राम और लक्ष्मण का शूर्पणखा से मिलना
राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता का वनवास का समय शांतिपूर्वक बीत रहा था। तभी राक्षस कन्या शूर्पणखा उसी वन में भ्रमण कर रही थी। पंचवटी में भ्रमण करते हुए उसकी मुलाकात भगवान राम से हुई। भगवान राम के गौर वर्ण और सुंदरता को देखकर वह मुग्ध हो गई।
उसने अपना रूप परिवर्तित कर लिया और एक सुंदर कन्या बनकर राम के पास गई और उनके समक्ष विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखा। प्रभु राम ने उसका प्रस्ताव ठुकरा दिया क्योंकि वह पहले ही विवाह कर चुके थे। प्रभु राम ने शूर्पणखा को सीता के बारे में बताया।
प्रभु राम ने शूर्पणखा से कहा कि तुम मेरे छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण से विवाह कर सकती हो। वह रूपवान और गुणवान है। उसका शरीर स्वस्थ अत्यंत आकर्षक है। वह एक बलवान पुरुष है। तुम अपना विवाह प्रस्ताव लेकर लक्ष्मण के पास जाओ। तुम्हारी इच्छा पूरी हो जाएगी। जब शूर्पणखा विवाह का प्रस्ताव लेकर लक्ष्मण के पास गई तो उन्होंने अस्वीकार कर दिया।
लक्ष्मण बोले की वे अपने भैया और भाभी के दास हैं। यदि शूर्पणखा उनसे विवाह करती है तो उसे भी दासी बनना पड़ेगा। इस बात से वह बहुत अपमानित महसूस करने लगी और उसने माता सीता पर आक्रमण कर दिया।
वह सोचने लगी कि यदि सीता की मृत्यु हो जाएगी तो राम उससे विवाह कर लेंगे। यह सोचकर उसने सीता पर आक्रमण किया था। लक्ष्मण ने सीता की रक्षा करते हुए अपनी तलवार निकाली और शूर्पणखा की नाक काट दी। इससे उसे बहुत दर्द हुआ और अपमानित महसूस करते हुए वह अपने भाई खर और दूषण के पास गई और लक्ष्मण से बदला लेने के लिए कहने लगी

खर और दूषण से राम लक्ष्मण का युद्ध
शूर्पणखा द्वारा उकसाने पर खर और दूषण राम और लक्ष्मण से बदला लेने के लिए आए और युद्ध करने लगे। पर कुछ ही देर में दोनों मारे गए। अपने भाइयों की मृत्यु को देखकर वह और नाराज हो गई। शूर्पणखा अपना प्रतिशोध लेने के लिए राक्षसों के राजा और अपने बड़े भाई रावण के पास गई। उसने पूरी बात चीखते हुए बतायी कि किस तरह लक्ष्मण ने उसकी नाक काट दी।

रावण द्वारा सीता का हरण करना
शूर्पणखा ने रावण को सीता के रूप और सुंदरता के बारे में भी बताया जिससे रावण अत्यंत आकर्षित हुआ। वह अपने पुष्पक विमान में बैठकर आया और राक्षस मारीच के पास गया। मारीच के पास अपना रूप बदलने की दिव्य शक्तियां थी।
रावण ने मारीच से सीता हरण योजना में शामिल होने को कहा। पहले तो मारीच ने रावण को मना कर दिया। परंतु रावण द्वारा दबाव बनाने पर वह सीता हरण षड्यंत्र में शामिल हो गया। यदि मारीच यह बात नहीं मानता तो रावण उसकी हत्या कर देता। उसने प्रभु राम द्वारा मिलने वाली मृत्यु का चुनाव किया।

मारीच द्वारा स्वर्ण मृग का रूप धारण करना
रावण के कहने पर मारीच ने स्वर्ण मृग (सुनहरा हिरण) का रूप धारण कर लिया और माता सीता का ध्यान आकर्षित करने लगा। जैसे ही माता सीता ने मारिच को देखा उन्होंने राम से आग्रह किया कि मरीज को पकड़कर ले आये।
प्रभु राम सीता माता की इच्छा पूरी करने के लिए स्वर्ण मृग (मारीच) के पीछे चले गए। जाने से पहले उन्होंने अपने छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण को सीता की सुरक्षा की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी। बहुत समय व्यतीत हो गया पर प्रभु राम नहीं लौटे।
लक्ष्मण सोचने लगे कि निश्चित रूप से प्रभु राम किसी संकट में आ गए हैं। जैसे जैसे समय बीतता गया सीता माता की चिंता भी बढ़ने लगी। वे भी राम को लेकर व्याकुल होने लगी।
दूसरी ओर वन में प्रभु राम मारीच के पीछे दौड़ रहे थे और उन्होंने अपना तीर चलाया। जैसे ही तीर मारीच को लगा वह अपने असली रूप में आ गया। रावण की योजनानुसार मारीच “लक्ष्मण!! बचाओ लक्ष्मण! सीता! सीता!” की कराहती आवाज में चीखने लगा।
यह चीख सुनकर सीता अत्यंत व्याकुल हो गई। उन्होंने लक्ष्मण से कहा कि “तुम जाकर अपने भैया की रक्षा करो!” जाने से पूर्व लक्ष्मण ने सीता माता की रक्षा के लिए कुटिया के चारों ओर लक्ष्मण रेखा बना दी।
“भाभी यह लक्ष्मणरेखा है! इसके भीतर कोई नहीं आ सकता! तुम इसके भीतर सुरक्षित रहोगी! पर जब तक मैं भैया को लेकर वापस ना लौटूं तुम इस लक्ष्मण रेखा के बाहर मत आना” यह बात कहकर लक्ष्मण प्रभु राम को खोजने चले गये।

रावण द्वारा भिक्षुक का रूप धारण करना
रावण इसी अवसर को खोज रहा था। लक्षमण रेखा की वजह से वह कुटिया के भीतर ना प्रवेश कर सका। फिर उसने दूसरी योजना बनाई। रावण ने एक भिक्षुक (भिखारी) का रूप बना लिया। “भिक्षाम देहि” (भिक्षा दीजिए) वह कहने लगा। रावण की आवाज सुनकर सीता माता बाहर आयी और उसे पास आकर भिक्षा लेने को कहा।

सीता माता द्वारा लक्ष्मण रेखा से बाहर आना
रावण जानता था कि किसी भी तरह करके सीता माता को लक्ष्मण रेखा के बाहर लाना है। उसके बाद ही वह उनका अपहरण कर सकेगा। वह क्रोधित होने का अभिनय करने लगा। “किसी सन्यासी को बंधन में बांध कर दिया भिक्षा नहीं दी जाती। यदि मुझे भिक्षा देना है तो इस कुटिया के बंधन से मुक्त होकर भिक्षा दो अन्यथा मैं लौट जाऊंगा!” रावण ने कपट के साथ कहा।
सीता माता ने उसे बताया कि वह लक्ष्मण रेखा से बाहर नहीं आ सकती। कुछ देर बाद सीता माता लक्ष्मण रेखा के बाहर आ गई और रावण को भिक्षा देने लगी। रावण अपने असली रूप में आ गया और उसने माता सीता का अपहरण कर लिया। उसने सीता माता को बलपूर्वक अपने पुष्पक विमान में बिठा लिया और लंका की ओर चला गया।
लंका की ओर जाते हुए सीता माता ने अपने आभूषण धरती पर फेंकना शुरू कर दिया, जिससे प्रभु राम को उन तक पहुंचने का मार्ग मिल सके। सीता माता की पुकार सुनकर जटायु नाम का एक विशाल पक्षी उनकी रक्षा को आया और रावण से युद्ध करने लगा।
पर रावण ने उसके पंख काट दिए। जटायू पृथ्वी पर गिरा और कराहने लगा। सीता माता की पुकार सुनकर राम लक्ष्मण कुटिया की तरफ लौटे। जहां पर उन्हें सीता के अपहरण की जानकारी मिली।
सीता द्वारा फेंके गए आभूषण मिले और विशालकाय घायल पक्षी जटायु से वह मिले। जटायु ने प्रभु राम को बताया कि लंकापति रावण ने सीता का हरण कर लिया है और उन्हें लंका ले गया है।

Roaming from one forest to another, Ram, Lakshman and Sita reached a place called Panchavati. This elevation was very dear to him and he decided to stay here in the last years of exile. Panchavati place is situated on the banks of river Godavari. Ram, Lakshman and Sita started living here by building a hut.

The time of exile of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita was passing peacefully. That’s why the demon girl Shurpanakha was roaming in the same forest. While visiting Panchvati, he met Lord Rama. She was mesmerized by seeing the fair complexion and beauty of Lord Rama.
She changed her form and went to Rama as a beautiful girl and proposed marriage to him. Lord Rama rejected her proposal as he was already married. Lord Rama told Shurpanakha about Sita.
Lord Ram told Shurpanakha that you can marry my younger brother Laxman. He is handsome and virtuous. Her body is healthy and very attractive. He is a strong man. You go to Laxman with your marriage proposal. Your wish will come true. When Shurpanakha went to Lakshmana with a marriage proposal, he refused.
Laxman said that he is the slave of his brother and sister-in-law. If Shurpanakha marries him, she will also have to become a maid. Due to this, she felt very insulted and attacked Mother Sita.
She started thinking that if Sita dies then Rama will marry her. Thinking this, he attacked Sita. Lakshmana, while protecting Sita, took out his sword and cut off Shurpanakha’s nose. This pained her greatly and feeling humiliated she went to her brothers Khara and Dushan and asked Lakshmana to take revenge.

Ram Lakshman’s battle with Khar and Dushan
Instigated by Shurpanakha, Khara and Dushan came to take revenge on Rama and Lakshmana and started fighting. But soon both were killed. She became more angry after seeing the death of her brothers. Shurpanakha went to the king of the demons and her elder brother Ravana to seek her revenge. She told the whole thing screaming how Laxman cut off her nose.

Abduction of Sita by Ravana
Shurpanakha also told Ravana about Sita’s form and beauty, which greatly attracted Ravana. He came in his Pushpak Vimana and went to the demon Maricha. Maricha had divine powers to change his form.
Ravana asked Maricha to join the Sita Haran plan. At first Marich refused Ravana. But on being pressured by Ravana, he joined the conspiracy to abduct Sita. If Maricha did not agree to this, Ravana would have killed him. He chose the death met by Lord Ram.

At the behest of Ravana, Marich assumed the form of Swarna Mriga (golden deer) and started attracting the attention of Mother Sita. As soon as Mother Sita saw Marich, she requested Rama to catch the patient and bring him.
Lord Rama went after the golden deer (Mareech) to fulfill the wish of Sita Mata. Before leaving, he entrusted the responsibility of protecting Sita to his younger brother Lakshmana. A lot of time passed but Lord Ram did not return.
Laxman started thinking that surely Lord Ram is in some trouble. As time passed, Sita Mata’s worry also started increasing. She also started getting worried about Ram.
On the other side in the forest Lord Rama was running after Marich and he shot his arrow. As soon as the arrow hit Marich, he came back in his original form. According to Ravana’s plan, Marich “Laxman!! Save Laxman! Sita! Sita!” Started screaming in a moaning voice.
Sita became extremely distraught after hearing this cry. He told Laxman that “You go and protect your brother!” Before leaving, Lakshman made a Lakshman Rekha around the hut to protect Sita’s mother.
“Sister-in-law this is Laxmanrekha! No one can come inside it! You’ll be safe inside it! But don’t come out of this Lakshman Rekha until I return with my brother”. Saying this, Lakshman went to find Lord Ram.

Disguised as a mendicant by Ravana
Ravana was searching for this opportunity. He could not enter inside the hut because of the Lakshman Rekha. Then he made another plan. Ravana took the form of a Bhikshuka (beggar). “Bhiksham dehi” (give alms) he started saying. Sita Mata came out after hearing Ravana’s voice and asked him to come near and take alms.

Coming out of Lakshman Rekha by Sita Mata
Ravana knew that by any means Sita Mata had to be brought out of Laxman Rekha. Only then would he be able to abduct them. He started acting angry. “A sanyasi is not given alms after being tied in bondage. If I have to give alms, then free yourself from the bondage of this hut and give alms, otherwise I will return!” Ravana said with deceit.
Sita Mata told him that he could not come out of Lakshman Rekha. After some time Sita’s mother came out of Laxman Rekha and started giving alms to Ravana. Ravana came in his real form and kidnapped Mother Sita. He forced Sita Mata to sit in his Pushpak Vimana and went towards Lanka.
On her way to Lanka, Sita Mata started throwing her ornaments on the earth, to make way for Lord Rama to reach her. Hearing the cry of Mother Sita, a huge bird named Jatayu came to her rescue and started fighting with Ravana.
But Ravana cut off his wings. Jatayu fell on the earth and started moaning. Ram Laxman returned to the cottage after hearing the call of Mother Sita. Where he got information about Sita’s kidnapping.
The ornaments thrown by Sita are found and they meet the giant wounded bird Jatayu. Jatayu told Lord Rama that Lankapati Ravana has abducted Sita and taken her to Lanka.
