Earlier this month, the film industry was sent reeling by the lacklustre performances of holiday season blockbusters Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. As both these films rapidly disappeared from cinemas, Do Baaraa featuring Taapsee Pannu followed suit last week. Unbeknownst to many though, is the successful debut of Jay Bodas’ Fakt Mahilao Maate in Gujarati cinema. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Tarjanee Bhadla, and Kalpana Gadekar, the film has enjoyed a remarkable opening weekend despite little promotional coverage.
Although it was only a regional release in Gujarati, Fakt Mahilao Maate was able to garner an impressive Rs. 1.25 crore on its opening day. Following the lacklustre performance of Hindi movies, this Gujarat flick experienced a rejuvenation in fortunes; with more shows, screens and spectators, the movie saw a growth of 24% from Day 2 to Day 3 with earnings of Rs. 1.55 crores and Rs. 2 crores respectively. Thus, despite being hindered by a limited reach and having received very little promotion, Fakt Mahilao Maate still managed to bag an impressive Rs 4.80 crore over the course of its debut weekend!
Do Baaraa, a Hindi-language release, garnered Rs. 1.74 crore on its first day yet quickly evaporated from the big screens soon after. Looking ahead, it’s likely that Fakt Mahilao Maate, a Gujarati flick, will attract more viewers and elevate their box office profits even further as positive reactions by the public circulate and there is no real competition to vie with.
Gujarati film, #FaktMahilaoMaate has recorded a phenomenal opening weekend.
