बछ बारस व्रत कथा
बछ बारस के दिन महिलाएं अपने पुत्र की लंबी आयु के लिए व्रत रखती है। इस दिन गाय माता और उसके बछड़े की पूजा की जाती है,
बहुत समय पहले गांव में एक साहूकार रहता था, जिसके सात बेटे थे। साहूकार ने गांव में एक तालाब का निर्माण करवाया किन्तु बारह वर्षों तक भी वह तालाब नहीं भरा। इस संदर्भ में साहूकार ने कुछ विद्वान पंडितों से सलाह लेना उचित समझा। साहूकार ने पंडितों से पूछा कि इतना समय होने के बाद भी मेरा तालाब क्यों नहीं भरा? तब पंडितों ने कहा यदि तुम अपने बड़े बेटे या तुम्हारे बड़े पोते की बलि दोगे तो ही यह तालाब भरेगा।

साहूकार ने पंडितो की बात मान ली और अपनी बड़ी बहू को पीहर भेज दिया। साहूकार की बड़ी बहू हर साल बछ बारस का व्रत रख कर बछ बारस की कथा सुनती थी। बड़ी बहु के पीहर जाते ही साहूकार ने वही किया जो उसे पंडितो ने कहा और अपने बड़े पोते की बलि चढ़ा दी। इसके तुरंत बाद ही बहुत तेज वर्षा हुई और तालाब पानी से भर गया। तालाब को पानी से भरा देख साहूकार उसकी पूजा करने निकल पड़ा और उसे ऐसा करता देख बाकी सभी लोग भी उसके पीछे तालाब की पूजा करने के लिए जाने लगे। जाते समय साहूकार ने अपनी दासी को गीऊंला धानुला (इसका अर्थ है चने, मोठ) बनाने के लिए कहा।

साहूकार के यहां एक गाय का बच्चा था, जिसका नाम भी गीऊंला धानुला था। दासी ने समझा की वह उसे गाय के बच्चे को पकाने के लिए कह कर गए है तो उसने वैसा ही किया। साहूकार और उसकी पत्नी गाजे-बाजे लेकर अपने बेटे- बहू के साथ तालाब की पूजा करने लगे। कुछ समय बाद जिस पोते की बलि दी गई थी वह गोबर में लिपटा हुआ मिला और कहने लगा कि वो भी तालाब में कूदूंगा।

उस बच्चे को देखकर साहूकार बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ और सोचने लगा की गाय माता ने ही हमारी लाज रखी है जिस कारण आज हमें हमारा पोता वापस मिल गया। साहूकार की बड़ी बहु जो कुछ समय विलाप कर रही थी अपने बड़े बेटे को देख बहुत खुश हुई। तब साहूकार भागता हुआ घर पहुंचा और दासी से गाय के बछड़े के बारे में पूछा। तब दासी ने उत्तर दिया की आपके कहने के अनुसार मैंने गीऊंला धानुला पका लिया।

दासी की यह बात सुनकर साहूकार क्रोधित हो उठा और अपनी दासी से कहने लगा। अरे! पापिन यह तूने क्या अनर्थ कर दिया, पहले ही एक पाप तो मुश्किल से उतार कर आए हैं उससे पहले ही तूने दूसरा पाप हमारे माथे मढ़ दिया। साहूकार और साहूकारनी चिंता में पड़ गए कि अब गाय आएगी तो उसे क्या जवाब देंगे। साहूकार ने बछड़े को खड्डे में डालकर दबा दिया।

जब शाम को गाय जंगल से लौटी तो अपने बच्चे को वहां न देखकर चिल्लाने लगी। जब उसने मिटटी को खोदा तो उसमें से एक गाय का बछड़ा निकल आया। ये देख साहूकार ने पूरे गांव में सभी स्त्रियों को बछ बारस का व्रत रखने का ढिंढोरा पिटवा दिया।

Long time ago there lived a moneylender in the village who had seven sons. The moneylender got a pond constructed in the village but it did not fill even for twelve years. In this context, the moneylender thought it appropriate to take advice from some learned pundits. The moneylender asked the pundits that even after so much time, why was my pond not filled? Then the pundits said that if you sacrifice your elder son or your elder grandson then only this pond will be filled.

The moneylender agreed to the pundits and sent his elder daughter-in-law to Pihar. The elder daughter-in-law of the moneylender used to listen to the story of Bachh Baras every year by observing a fast for Bachh Baras. As soon as the elder daughter-in-law left, the moneylender did what the pundits told him and sacrificed his eldest grandson. Soon after this it rained very heavily and the pond was filled with water. Seeing the pond full of water, the moneylender went out to worship it and seeing him doing so, all the other people also followed him to worship the pond. While leaving, the moneylender asked his maid to make Geeunla Dhanula (it means gram, moth).

The moneylender had a calf at his place, whose name was Geonla Dhanula. The maid understood that he had asked her to cook the calf, so she did so. The moneylender and his wife started worshiping the pond with their son and daughter-in-law with music. After some time, the grandson who was sacrificed was found covered in cow dung and said that he would also jump into the pond.

The moneylender was very happy to see that child and started thinking that mother cow has kept our shame, because of which we got our grandson back today. The elder daughter-in-law of the moneylender, who had been mourning for some time, was very happy to see her elder son. Then the moneylender reached home running and asked the maidservant about the cow’s calf. Then the maid replied that according to you I have cooked Geeunla Dhanula.

The moneylender got angry after hearing these words of the maidservant and started saying to his maidservant. Hey! O sinner, what a disaster you have done, you have already removed one sin with difficulty, before that you have put another sin on our forehead. The moneylender and the moneylender were worried that if the cow comes now, what answer will they give to her. The moneylender buried the calf by putting it in a pit.
