Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun professionally known as Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was born on 16th July 1990. Big Wiz is a prominent figure in the modern-day Afrobeats music scene, he is one of the biggest and most influential. He has been in the scene for years and he is not ready to leave anytime soon.
Biography
Wizkid was born on 16 July 1990, in Surulere Lagos. His mother was a Pentecostal Christian, while his dad practices Islam, he has twelve female siblings. Ayodeji Balogun Ibrahim attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School. He disclosed that his father had three wives in a radio interview with Tim Westwood in 2012. He formed a group called the Glorious Five with a couple of his church friends. The group managed to release an album prior o disbanding, he went by the stage name Lil Prinz until 2006.
He later met OJB Jezreel, a record producer who prevented him from recording for a year. He was also present during the recording sessions for Sound Sultan’s debut album Jagbajantis. He rose to fame after signing a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment in 2009. He co-wrote “Omoge You Too Much”, a song from Banky W.’s The W Experience album.
The singer dropped out of Lagos State University (LASU) in mid-2009, he later attended Lead City University but dropped out after completing two sessions.
The singer has many successful studio albums which include Superstar which he released in 2011, and AYO released in 2013, among other albums.
Record label and contract
Empire Mates Entertainment
Wizkid signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment in 2009. He left the label after his five-year contract expired. In an interview he had on October 2019 with Capital Xtra, he said he left E.M.E without any money.
Starboy Entertainment
Big Wiz established Starboy Entertainment in March 2013. His first signings were Maleek Berry and Legendury Beatz. In 2013, he signed L.A.X as its first recording act. DJ Tunez was signed in 2016 as the label’s in-house disc Jockey, Efya, R2Bees, and Mr Eazi were signed to the label in May 2016.
Sony Music/ RCA
Wizkid signed a multi-album worldwide record deal with RCA Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music in 2017.
