Best known for creating cult films like Masoom and Mr. India, director Shekhar Kapur recently took to social media platform Twitter to talk about the box office collection of his latest film. Referring to how the film’s success is often classified by its entry into Rs. 100 crore or Rs. 200 crore club, he said, the filmmaker believes that in this race there is often no importance given to the film’s content. Having received a lot of support from movie buffs and fans alike who replied to his tweet, he added that in many ways it takes away from what cinema could be all about.
Taking to Twitter, Shekhar Kapur said, Too much emphasis is being put on box office numbers rather than on the content of a film; even for audiences. I never paid attention to earnings from either Masoom or Mr. India when they came out, and now 30 years later these films are still watched. To back up his statement, he was showered with support from online users who wrote things such as content seems to be the casualty in this obsession with box office collection. One fan remarked that beautiful and realistic cinema like ‘Masoom’ will always be my go-to comfort watch.
- Box office collections are becoming far far more important than the film itself. Even for audiences. I can’t ever remember looking at first weeks box off collections of Masoom, or Mr India
- And over 30 years later, people are still watching these films

One person on social media also explained how movies such as Andaz Apna Apna and Silsila, which did not make a lot of money at the box office but became cult classics overtime. Some Hit Movies are Forgotten over time… Some Flop Movies become Cult Hits over time. This was echoed by another social media user who said, Money Scores Over Quality in Reel Life and Real Life Sir… Such are the Times..
Known for his incredible style of cinema, this talented director made his Bollywood debut with the film Masoom. He then went on to create movies such as Mr. India and Bandit Queen. He has also ventured into international productions with a biographical period piece entitled Elizabeth in 1998 which garnered 7 nominations at the Oscars. This one starred Cate Blanchett who was notable in her performance alongside Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Fiennes, John Gielgud, and Richard Attenborough – all playing significant roles. His return to Bollywood is scheduled to be released next year titled Paani. Sadly however after the untimely death of its lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput last year – it has been postponed indefinitely until an alternate cast can be found or they find it unnecessary altogether.
