Last week on Friday, Karan Malhotra’s directorial, Shamshera – which had been talked about a lot and heavily promoted – was released. Featuring Ranbir Kapoor in a double role alongside Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor, the movie was assumed to have an explosive debut given its humongous scale of production and the huge release of 4,350 screens. Surprisingly, however, it was not the expected success story, but instead a failure as Shamshera remained at a low collection through its opening weekend.
In this box office analysis, we compare the collections of Shamshera with the revenue of Ranbir Kapoor’s previous projects. The film collected 31.75 crores and has become the sixth consecutive flop for the actor. Out of his last eight releases, only Sanju and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil managed to make any profit, as Sanju grossed 342.53 cr while the latter brought in 112.48 cr. The rest, including Jagga Jasoos (54.16 cr), Tamasha (67.26 cr), Bombay Velvet (23.67 cr), Roy (44.52 cr), and Besharam (59.79 cr) all failed to leave a mark at the box office.
Given the current trend, Shamshera, which was expected to see around Rs. 50 cr. coming in over its opening weekend has severely underperformed. Going further, with the audience opting to stay away from theatres, the business of the film is unlikely to see much of an increase.
