The long–awaited Yash Raj Films’ venture ‘Shamshera’, directed by Karan Malhotra and featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor was released a week ago to great fanfare, with an initial release across 4350 screens in India. While the expectations for the movie were quite high, the film’s performance at the box office has failed to live up to them. Since its lackluster opening, the film has seen consistent poor business in its opening weekend and opening week.
In this box office report, we take a closer look at the opening week collections of Shamshera, as well as how it stacks up to Ranbir Kapoor’s past releases. Unsurprisingly, Shamshera, which received less than satisfactory reviews, earned a total of Rs. 40.45 cr in its first week, thereby becoming the actor’s eleventh highest opening week grosser to date. Comparatively, the business of Shamshera was unable to exceed that of other films like Besharam, Rockstar, Jagga Jasoos, and Roy, each of which had accumulated a higher opening week collection than Shamshera. Fortunately, however, the performance of Shamshera did surpass that of other movies featuring Ranbir, such as Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Anjaana Anjaani, and Bombay Velvet, each of which earned lower opening week figures than Shamshera.
With the launch of Ek Villain Returns, Shamshera is no longer running in the cinemas. Predictions from the trade suggest that its business will be significantly weakened. Though some viewers may still catch the movie, its overall earnings are unlikely to experience a huge boost.
