The Chandraprakash Dwivedi directed Akshay Kumar starrer Samrat Prithviraj was released yesterday. Also featuring Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt, and Sonu Sood, the historical drama was expected to start with flying colours. However, the film which was released across 3750 screens [Hindi: 3550 + Tamil and Telugu: 200], in India has started off on a lackluster note.
In this report, we analyze the opening day performance for Samrat Prithviraj when compared to previous major releases post-pandemic. Earning Rs. 10.70 cr from its first ever release, it stands as the seventh highest opening grosser post-pandemic in Indian cinema history . And yet, it doesn’t beat other openings day records such as those achieved by KGF – Chapter 2 (Rs. 53.95 cr), Sooryavanshi (Rs. 26.29 cr), RRR (Rs. 20.07cr), Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Rs.,14 11 crores), Bachchan Paandiye (Rs 13 25 crores) or 83 (Rs 12 64 crores).
Nevertheless, the movie manages to do well compared to other films released after being affected by the pandemic. Films such as Gangubai Kathiawadi, Heropanti 2 and Antim-The Final Truth all managed to collect less than Samrat Prithviraj. It is expected that going forward, his business will prosper due to this successful opening weekend collection.
