After the theatre lockdown following the virus outbreak, theaters have reopened with an increase in seat capacity to overfill seats. Audiences who have started returning to see movies find that for now it is still safe to go back into a theater and watch them again. Films are being released once again after many delays – but so far they’ve had mixed reviews.
One film in particular, Roohi which stars Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Varun Sharma has actually done quite well at the box office this week even though it did not break any records when it opened last Friday (Jun 14). With most of India’s population currently staying away from public places due to fear of disease and apprehension about safety among other reasons, we can say Roohi did much better than expected given these circumstances- taking home Rs 3 crores on opening day alone compared to Dhakdak’s 1st day earnings of around Rs 10 crore.
Apart from the audience’s hesitation for viewing theatres, there also remains the fact that Covid-19 still holds control over many theaters which hinders attendance. There are even more screens which are not available. A trade source reported to us that one major consequence of the pandemic was a sharp decrease in numbers – with small town movie theaters shrinking significantly because they were no longer making enough profit while larger chains grew stronger and bigger again. Yet on an upside, Janhvi Kapoor’s film Roohi has proven to be successful despite its slowness; right now it is expected to generate business well considering it gets an extension this weekend.
