Reasons its time to call a plumber to save water and money

4 Reasons It’s Time to Call a Plumber

A plumber is an expert at installing, repairing and maintaining plumbing pipes, fixtures and drains. Their skills and expertise can save you money on repairs down the road.

Running toilets, dripping faucets and other leaks send gallons of water down the drain every day. Fixing them can cut your water bill by 10% or more.

    1. Leaky Pipes

Leaking pipes are a big problem that will not only result in costly water bills but could lead to mold, mildew, and foundation damage. A plumber will have the tools and knowledge to find and repair leaking pipes quickly.

If you have noticed pools of water around your home, it’s a sign that there is a leaky pipe somewhere in your house. A plumber will be able to diagnose the issue and determine how bad the leak is.

Like the famous biblical character, John Bunyan, knows, “one leak sinks a ship.” And while his words aren’t quite literal, they still apply—one small plumbing issue can grow into something much bigger over time. That’s why a plumber should be called right away when you notice any signs of a leaky pipe.

    2. Burst Pipes

A burst pipe is a serious plumbing issue that needs to be dealt with immediately. Signs that a pipe has burst include an excessive water bill, a strange smell (like rotten eggs), and sounds of water in the walls or ceiling.

Moisture from a burst pipe seeps into floors, ceilings and insulation, which can lead to major damage that requires costly repairs. The water leaking from a broken pipe can also cause mildew and mold.

While actual pipe repairs need to be handled by a plumber, homeowners can do a few things to minimize the amount of water that comes into their home. For example, moving furniture away from puddles or depressions on the floor can help to reduce water damage. Additionally, installing foam pipe insulation can help to prevent pipes from freezing.

    3. Frozen Pipes

With the temperatures dropping and a blizzard brewing, homeowners need to be mindful of frozen pipes. The stagnant water in the pipes freezes and puts pressure on the pipe that can cause it to break. Pipes located in unheated areas, under sinks or in the garage and attic are especially susceptible to freezing. If you suspect a frozen pipe, shut the water off at the water main and call your local plumber right away.

If you turn on the faucet and only a trickle comes out, or you see signs of mold coming from drains, your pipes may be frozen. You can try to apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe using a heating pad, hair dryer or space heater, but never

use an open flame like a blow torch, lighter or candle because it poses a fire hazard.

    4. Clogged Drains

Clogged drains are a common plumbing problem that can lead to water or sewage backing up into fixtures. They also make it impossible to use a fixture and may even emit foul odors. Start by checking the lowest level of your home – toilets and showers are usually where clogs first appear since they have the shortest pipes leading to the main sewer line.

Most drain clogs are the result of slow buildup over time as food waste, hair, soap scum, and other debris sticks to pipe walls. Prevent clogs by using a drain snake or a bent wire hanger to remove any large chunks of food and other material. Consider using Bio-Clean regularly to help prevent clogs as it eats away at the organic material that builds up in your pipes without damaging them.

    5. Broken Fixtures

If you have sinks or drains that clog repeatedly, or have low water pressure at certain fixtures, it’s time to call in the professionals. These problems can cause a lot of headaches and cost money in the long run.

Fixtures and faucets that are constantly leaking can waste a significant amount of water, driving up your water bill significantly. They can also lead to other, more serious plumbing issues down the line. Strange noises like banging or rattling coming from your pipes or drains may indicate that there is a problem. Foul odors around the house, in your drains or in your yard, are another sign that it’s time to call a plumber. Addressing these issues quickly can prevent damage and save money in the long run.
