Ponniyin Selvan had an impressive opening in southern markets and international cinemas alike. As of this week, Ponniyin Selvan became the highest grossing Tamil film domestically, with a revenue exceeding $3 million (USD). Last weekend, when it was released at theaters in North America -the world’s largest movie market- Ponniyin Selvan surpassed records set by Rajnikanth’s blockbuster Baasha to become the first ever Indian film to make it onto both the US Top 10 weekly list for domestic films and the North American top ten weekly chart for foreign releases.
As per reports, Ponniyin Selvan has now crossed the Rs. 400 cr gross market at the worldwide box office, comfortably entering the highly exclusive Rs.400 crore club after its second weekend running. If that wasn’t enough, when compared to other Tamil film releases, Ponniyan Selvan has now become the third film to achieve this feat – right next to previous releases such as the Rajinikanth – Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 and Kamal Haasan – Fahad Faasil starrer Vikram. Going forward, Ponniyan Selvan continues to dominate the box office in southern territories and some overseas markets too – all while continuing it’s upward trend thanks to strong reviews from critics and social media alike. Given this films current performance (and trade predictions), it looks like Ponniyan Selvan might just surpass expectations becoming one of the most successful Kollywood productions so far!
