Mani Ratnam’s historic epic Ponniyin Selvan 1 with Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha has created new records for its collection within Tamil Nadu; after surpassing Kamal Hassan’s old record. This week alone (Monday), Ponniyan Selvan entered the ‘Rs. 175 Crore Club’ while also emerging as the highest grossing movie of all time in Tamil Nadu.
Despite being way behind the other leading Tamil films in terms of numbers domestically and internationally, PS 1 has been able to reach an unprecedented milestone for movies made in the language at the global level. With its worldwide earnings close to Rs. 375 crores plus, PS 1 has managed to stand out among other South Indian movies when it comes to earning close-to-Rs. 400 crore or more. It stands proudly next to some of the most prolific blockbusters in recent times like 2.0 and Vikram which were released this year already- making it one of only three Tamil films with such a noteworthy feat under its belt at this point in time.
With 2.0 standing tall at first place with a total of Rs 600 crore, Vikram has been able to occupy the second spot with about Rs 435 crore gross income. All time earnings are always exceptionally rare in industries like these and yet we’ve seen two all time earners in just over three months time. After taking five years to surpass Baahubali 2, it only took five months before PS1 toppled him at the box office; which is set to happen again this year when PS2 releases during summer.
