Director Mani Ratnam’s latest blockbuster, Ponniyin Selvan or PS-1 starring big names such as Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan among others was released to theaters a few weeks ago. With its release in multiple different languages the film has done relatively well domestically so far. However, this is nothing compared to how it’s fared overseas in America where it has made record breaking profits so far.
In this box office report, we take a deep dive into the film Ponniyin Selvan, checking out how its overseas numbers are stacking up against other Tamil films, such as Rajnikanth – Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 among others who have been featured in the past 25 years. Receiving an intake of USD 5,657,276 [Rs. 46.62 cr.] PS-1 has already surpassed the receipts for said Indian superstar -2 0 release that had grossed US $5409 317 or Rs 4540 lakhs ($5309 758). What is more commendable is it has become just one of three titles (from India) out of hundreds released over last 25 years to achieve such phenomenal success abroad!
Going forward, Ponniyin Selvan continues to run in theaters, with audiences continuously attending the movie. Given this current trend and the lack of competition faced by PS-1–the only movie currently being screened–trade predictions state that business for the film will continue to see growth throughout the week.
