The Mani Ratnam directed epic adventure movie Ponniyin Selvan- 1 that came out a while ago has been successful internationally. In India, the Tamil version of the movie has been making money hand over fist due to increasing demand. The Hindi dubbed version isn’t seeing nearly as much success in comparison though – partly because it is hard for them to find an audience. But outside India, they’re doing really well; financially thriving at the box office window.
Now entering the last few weeks of its theatrical run, Ponniyin Selvan-1 has racked up remarkable collections thus far. At the world wide box office, it has managed to emerge as one of the most popular films ever made with a mind boggling total collection amounting to Rs. 456.25 cr. In fact, while being a non-Rajnikanth starrer who entered the top three best performing Tamil films ever made – it beat out Kabali (Rs 432.79 cr.), Vikram (Rs 410.25) and other films before it – this Akshay Kumar – Rajnikant starred movie was able to rack up an incredible Rs. 800 crore at the world wide box office!
Going even further, Ponniyin Selvan 1 has seen heavy success in cinemas across Tamil Nadu and it is predicted to see this trend continue. Trade analysts predict that the business of PS-1 will catch up to 2.0 because they are both still being shown at cinema theaters across Tamil Nadu.
