- Players arrive at the table with the predetermined rupee amount.
- This sum is brought to the table by each player.
- A coin toss determines who makes the first move.
- Each player is dealt a deck of 13 cards at random.
- At the start of the game, the first card from the deck is placed face-up in the open deck.
- The remaining cards are dealt face down into the closed deck.
- A joker card is drawn at random at the start of each game.
- The goal of the game is to make sequences and/or sets out of all 13 cards in your hand.
- To complete their sets and/or sequences, each player takes turns picking or discarding a card from the closed/open deck.

- If a printed joker is used as the joker in a rummy game, players may use any Ace card from any suit as a joker in their sequences or sets.

- At least two sequences must be declared, one of which must be a pure sequence.
- Players should be cautious when using two decks, as the same card cannot be used twice in a set (e.g., 7♠ 7♠ 7♥ is not a valid set).
- Pool rummy is a card game played between two and four players using one or more decks of playing cards.

With a few notable exceptions, the games of 101 and 201 pool rummy are nearly identical. The main difference between pool rummy games 101 and 201 is the number of points.
A player can only accrue a maximum of 101 points in the game of 101 pool rummy, but a maximum of 201 points in the game of rummy 201 pool. A player is eliminated from a round of the 101 pool rummy game after scoring 101 points, and they are eliminated from a round of the 201 pool rummy game after scoring 201 points.
