One film, KGF-Chapter 2, has been tearing up the rulebook ever since its release. After a resounding opening weekend and stellar success for subsequent weeks, the movie broke records one after another. The latest numbers show that the movie earned Rs 420 crore, or US$60 million at domestic ticket sales alone. Its dubbed versions in Telugu and Tamil also excelled with collections at over Rs 200 crore each – testament to how potent Indian cinema can be.
Moreover, this phenomenon extended beyond just India where Kappa మీద (an unofficial name) fetched USD 10million during an initial three day run – far exceeding expectations from the audience there. But audiences weren’t too keen on claiming credit for such success either: estimates found that close to 90% people watching KAPPA had never seen any previous instalment of Kannada movies before making their judgement about whether they would prefer non-Hindi cinema instead.
