काल भैरव मंदिर वाराणसी, भारत के सबसे पुराने शिव मंदिरों में से एक है। भरोनाथ, विश्वेश्वरगंज (वाराणसी) में स्थित इस मंदिर का हिंदू धर्म में बड़ा ऐतिहासिक और सांस्कृतिक महत्व है; खासकर स्थानीय लोगों के बीच।मंदिर भैरव (काल भैरव) को समर्पित है, जो शिव का एक भयंकर रूप है और खोपड़ी की माला पहनते हैं और मोर पंखों का एक क्लब रखते हैं। “काल” शब्द का अर्थ “मृत्यु” और “समय” दोनों है। काल भैरव का अर्थ मृत्यु और काल दोनों के भय को दूर करने वाला भी है। माना जाता है कि काल भैरव से काल भी डरता है।
मंदिर के आंतरिक गर्भगृह में काल भैरव की एक चांदी के मुख वाली मूर्ति है जो अपने वाहन (वाहन), एक कुत्ते पर विराजमान है और एक त्रिशूल पकड़े हुए है। द्वार के माध्यम से आगंतुकों को केवल सजे हुए आइकन (मालाओं के साथ) का चेहरा दिखाई देता है। बाकी आइकन कपड़े के टुकड़े से ढका हुआ है। मंदिर के पिछले दरवाजे पर, भैरव के एक अन्य पहलू क्षेत्रपाल भैरव का एक चिह्न है।

धार्मिक विश्वास
एक बार, देवता ब्रह्मा और विष्णु वर्चस्व के लिए प्रतिस्पर्धा कर रहे थे। तब शिव दोनों के बीच एक शक्तिशाली दिव्य प्रकाश के रूप में प्रकट हुए। क्रोधित ब्रह्मा ने अपने 5वें सिर से प्रकाश के स्तंभ को देखा, जो क्रोध से जलने लगा। शिव ने तुरन्त नए भैरव या काल भैरव (‘काल’ के भय को नष्ट करते हुए: “काल भैरव”) का निर्माण किया, जिन्होंने ब्रह्मा के 5 वें सिर को काट दिया। हालांकि सिर काल भैरव के हाथ से चिपक गया।

शिव ने तब काल भैरव को विभिन्न स्थानों पर जाने का आदेश दिया, लेकिन ब्राह्मणहत्या, ब्रह्मा का सिर काटने का पाप एक रक्तमय महिला के रूप में हुआ, जब तक वह वाराणसी नहीं पहुंचे, जहां ब्रह्मा का सिर जमीन पर गिर गया। इस स्थान को “कपाल मोचन तीर्थ” कहा जाता है। वाराणसी में प्रवेश करते ही वे ब्राह्मणहत्या के पाप से मुक्त हो गए। शिव ने तब घोषणा की कि “काल भैरव” अपने शिष्यों के पापों को दूर करने के लिए हमेशा वाराणसी में रहेंगे।

इतिहास
काल भैरव मंदिर के निर्माण की सही तारीख ज्ञात नहीं है लेकिन यह अनुमान लगाया जाता है कि वर्तमान संरचना 17वीं शताब्दी ईस्वी के मध्य में बनाई गई थी।
धार्मिक महत्व
काल भैरव को सृष्टि का कोतवाल माना जाता है; हर कोई जो सृष्टि में मौजूद रहना चाहता है (भले ही भगवान) को अस्तित्व में रहने के लिए उसकी अनुमति लेनी होगी। उन्हें “सती पिंड” का कोतवाल भी माना जाता है और उनकी अनुमति के बिना कोई भी “सती पिंड” को छू नहीं सकता है। काल भैरव भक्तों की सभी संकटों से रक्षा करते हैं। प्रचलित मान्यता के अनुसार, काल भैरव को शहर का रक्षक माना जाता है।
Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Varanasi
Kaal Bhairav Mandir is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Varanasi, India. Situated in Bharonath, Vishweshwarganj (Varanasi), this temple has great historical and cultural importance in Hinduism; especially amongst the locals. The temple is dedicated to Bhairava (Kaal Bhairav), a fierce form of Shiva and wears a garland of skulls and carries a club of peacock feathers. The word “Kaal” means both “death” and “time”. Kaal Bhairav also means the one who removes the fear of both death and time. It is believed that even death is afraid of Kaal Bhairav.
Housed in the inner sanctum of the temple is a silver faced idol of Kal Bhairav who is seated on his vahana (vehicle), a dog and is holding a trident. Only the face of the icon decorated (with garlands) is visible to the visitors through the doorway. Rest of the icon is covered with a piece of cloth. On the rear door of the temple, there is an icon of Kshetrapal Bhairav, another aspect of Bhairava.

Religious belief
Once, the gods Brahma and Vishnu were competing for supremacy. Then Shiva appeared as a powerful divine light between the duo. An angry Brahma stared at the pillar of light with his 5th head, which started to burn out of anger. Shiva has instantly created the new being Bhairava or Kaal Bhairav (destroying the fear of ‘Kaal’ : “Kaal Bhairav”), who decapitated Brahma’s 5th head. However, the head stuck to Kaal Bhairav’s hand.
Hanuman Ji Ke 10 Sabse Prasiddh Mandir
Shiva then ordered Kaal Bhairav to go to various places but Brāhmanahatya, the sin of beheading Brahma personified as a gory woman, followed him until he reached Varanasi where Brahma’s head fell on the ground. The place is called “Kapal Mochan Teerth”. He was freed of the sin of Brāhmanahatya as he entered Varanasi. Shiva then pronounced that “Kaal Bhairav” will forever be in Varanasi in order to remove sins of his disciples.

Exact date of construction of Kaal Bhairav temple is not known but it is estimated that the current structure was built in the mid 17th century AD.
Religious importance
Kaal Bhairav is believed to be the Kotwal of Creation; everyone who wants to exist in Creation(even if Gods) needs to take his permission to exist. He is also believed to be the Kotwal of “Sati pind” and without his permission, no one can touch the “Sati pind”. Kaal Bhairav protects the devotees from all the problems. As per popular belief, Kal Bhairav is considered to be the protector of the city.
