How to Store Breast Milk: Tips for New Moms

Breast milk is a valuable source of nutrition for babies, and storing it properly can ensure that it remains safe and nutritious. If you are a new mom who wants to learn how to store breast milk, you are in the right place. In this article, we will provide you with some tips and guidelines to help you store breast milk correctly.

    Why Store Breast Milk?

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants, and it has many benefits for both the baby and the mother. Breast milk provides the baby with all the necessary nutrients and antibodies to fight off infections and illnesses. It also helps to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other health problems.

There are many reasons why a mother may need to store breast milk, such as:

    • She is returning to work or school and wants to continue breastfeeding.
    • She wants to build up a supply of breast milk for times when she is away from the baby.
    • She has an oversupply of milk and wants to save some for later use.
    • She wants to share her breast milk with a friend or family member who is unable to breastfeed.

Whatever the reason, storing breast milk properly is essential to maintain its quality and safety.

    How to Store Breast Milk

Here are some tips on how to store breast milk correctly:

    Choose the Right Container

Breast milk can be stored in different types of containers, such as glass bottles, plastic bottles, or breast milk bags. Whatever type of container you choose, make sure it is clean and has a tight-fitting lid.

If you are using plastic containers, choose ones that are labeled as “breast milk storage” or “food-grade.” Avoid using containers made of soft plastic or disposable bottle liners, as they may break down and release harmful chemicals into the milk.

    Label the Container

Before storing breast milk, label the container with the date and time it was expressed. This will help you keep track of the age of the milk and ensure that you use the oldest milk first.

If you are storing milk for your baby’s caregiver, include your baby’s name on the label as well.

    Store in Small Quantities

It is best to store breast milk in small quantities, such as 2-4 ounces, to avoid wasting any milk. This also makes it easier to thaw and use the milk later.

    Store in the Right Temperature

Breast milk can be stored at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or in the freezer, depending on how soon you plan to use it.

Room temperature: Breast milk can be stored at room temperature (up to 77°F or 25°C) for up to 4 hours. If the room is warmer than 77°F, store the milk in a cooler place.

Refrigerator: Breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator (at 40°F or below) for up to 4 days. Store the milk in the back of the fridge, where the temperature is the coldest.

Freezer: Breast milk can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. If you have a deep freezer, you can store it for up to 12 months. Store the milk in the back of the freezer, where the temperature is the coldest.

    Handle Breast Milk Carefully

When handling breast milk, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid touching the inside of the container or the nipple with your fingers, as this can introduce bacteria into the milk.

If you need to combine milk from different pumping sessions, make sure they are the same temperature before mixing them together.
