Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness if left untreated. The most common type of glaucoma is called primary open-angle glaucoma. It often progresses slowly and without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. However, some forms of glaucoma, like acute angle-closure glaucoma, can cause sudden and severe symptoms. Here are the signs and symptoms associated with glaucoma:

    Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (Chronic Glaucoma):

    • Gradual Loss of Peripheral Vision:

The most common symptom is the slow and painless loss of peripheral (side) vision.

    • Tunnel Vision:

As the disease progresses, the field of vision may continue to narrow, resembling looking through a tunnel.

    • Blind Spots:

Blind spots may develop in the peripheral vision.

    • Patchy Blind Areas in Central Vision:

Central vision may also be affected in the later stages of the disease. Refer to an Eye Specialist in Lahore to know more.

    • Difficulty Adjusting to Low Light:

Some individuals may have difficulty adjusting their eyes to low light conditions.

    • Blurred Vision:

Blurred vision may occur in the later stages of the disease.

    • Halos Around Lights:

Some people with glaucoma may see halos around lights, especially at night.

    Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma (Narrow-Angle Glaucoma):

    • Sudden Severe Eye Pain:

Intense pain in the eye is a characteristic symptom and may be accompanied by headaches.

    • Nausea and Vomiting:

    Nausea and vomiting may occur.

    • Blurred Vision:

    Rapidly progressing blurred vision.

    • Halos Around Lights:

Seeing halos around lights, similar to primary open-angle glaucoma.

    • Redness in the Eye:

The eye may appear red and feel hard to the touch.

    • Decreased or Cloudy Vision:

Vision may decrease or become cloudy.

It’s important to note that primary open-angle glaucoma often has no early warning signs, and vision loss can occur gradually. Regular eye examinations are crucial, especially for individuals at higher risk, such as those with a family history of glaucoma, individuals over the age of 60, or those with certain medical conditions like diabetes. Early detection and management are essential to prevent irreversible vision loss. If you experience any sudden or severe eye symptoms, seek immediate medical attention from an Eye Specialist in karachi.
