The latest installment in the KGF movie series came out last week on Thursday and was met with phenomenal success by audiences. Audiences were drawn to it regardless of when they could see it – some theaters had a show starting at 6 am while others had special shows later than midnight. To satisfy all this eagerness, the ticket sales went up each day until they reached an unimaginable sum of Rs. 219 crores (over 4 billion rupees). Now onto Day 5 running, KGF 2 has grossed another Rs. 25 75 crore (about US$3 million), bringing its total earnings to around $6 billion rupees ($90 million) since release.
This weekend, we looked at the sales of KGF: Chapter 2 up until this point and how it compares to other Bollywood movies released in English. Surprisingly enough, the success of KGF has surpassed even Rajinikanth’s own movie which was only able to make $189.56 million within 5 days! With this achievement, Yash earns his spot as one of the top 3 best performers in international cinema history! Beyond beating ‘2.0,’ he also managed to surpass other contemporary Bollywood movies such as Saaho ($142.95 million), Baahubali – The Beginning ($118.70 million) or Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 ($108.26 million).
With an astonishing Rs. 510.99 Cr to date, Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion has managed to maintain the number one position in terms of collections over the last few weeks at the box office. Nevertheless, this may soon change as KGF-Chapter 2 seems poised to take over from RRR, which has so far grossed a mere 253.84 Cr. Trade experts believe that if KGF2 continues going strong for another week or two, it might even surpass 300cr by the end of its run at theatres.
