Recently released Hindi movie Roohi has made a surprising amount of money on opening day – which is only half what most films generally make when they are just released. Half of its revenue came from the National Multiplex Chains, showing an immense interest for this type of film, and an even larger portion coming from theaters located in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar showing just how popular this genre can be among Indian audiences.
With Janhvi Kapoor starring as the female lead, Rajkummar Rao playing her love interest and Varun Sharma portraying her brother who was murdered before her eyes, it’s no wonder that people flocked to cinemas across India on Day One. Besides being successful economically already because most Bollywood films make over 2 crores on opening day alone – Roohi will hopefully pave way for other filmmakers to feel confident about presenting different kinds of stories to Indian audiences as well.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Jio Studios, Roohi that released on nearly 2500 plus screens has received mixed reviews. While a steady trend is not really expected from the film, the opening has given out a statement that there are people who are willing to step out of their homes to watch movies in theaters. The second day collections will drop, as Thursday saw an uptick due to Mahashivratri holiday and it remains to be seen if Roohi can gain traction again on Saturday and Sunday to put up a two-digit weekend total.
