The last time an Indian film had its best day was on 13th March 2020 when Angrezi Medium starring Irrfan Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan hit the box office with an opening gross of Rs. 4.03 crores. But soon after theatre attendance dropped drastically during the pandemic due to security concerns, which caused many other films in release to lose money. It seems now that it is poetic justice when a movie from the same production company will be able to take home this much-deserved prize this time around, if we are lucky enough for theatres to reopen again someday soon.
Despite early predictions by the Indian media, Roohi has done well at the box office despite rumors of low ticket sales. On opening weekend alone it grossed nearly Rs. 3 crore ($400K) in India; making it among one of the top 10 performing movies in country until this point! Although theaters were only able to open up about half-way across most of India due to the recent pandemic, people are happy that there is at least something worth watching this summer.
Though the primary target audience is the single-screen viewers, unfortunately not many such properties exist currently – which means Hardik Patel’s film may have difficulties attracting large audiences at multiplexes. Though they had their best opening ever on Friday due to this being a four-day weekend and though overall sales will drop slightly come Saturday as people return from Mahashivratri holidays, we can still hope for an increased revenue over that time period. All we need now is some investment and an efficient marketing campaign, so we’ll know just how far our movie goes!
