It’s amazing to witness the polar opposite performances of two films at the box office. Despite being announced with little fanfare, a relatively unknown lead actor, and little reach amongst potential viewers, one movie is resonating widely with audiences. Contrastingly, the other movie was perfectly crafted for its intended demographic, yet it’s not quite making a splash as expected.
Just a few days ago, Karthikeya 2 was a relatively unknown movie; yet it has quickly become one of the top picks this season, having earned 16.30 crore rupees within ten days in theaters. Even on Monday, it earned an impressive 0.98 crore rupees given its limited release and the positive word of mouth that’s been gradually building up. The film is not yet popular all across India – it is still appreciated mostly by those residing in specific states – however, the producers and financiers who put their money into Karthikeya 2 can already count themselves as lucky because this venture has turned out to be immensely profitable for them.
When Do Baaraa first released, expectations were high that the movie would be successful due to its positive reception from audiences. Its opening numbers at Rs. 0.72 crores, higher than anticipated, were promising for a healthy weekend box office haul; unfortunately this wasn’t the case and Monday saw a dip in revenue to Rs. 0.20 crores which affected the total collections at Rs. 3.18 crores so far. It seemed clear then that audience word of mouth had not translated into business success after all.
Karthikeya 2 is set to cross the Rs. 20 crore mark within days, possibly earning more than Rs. 25 crores over its lifetime. Meanwhile, Do Baaraa’s first week will bring in about Rs. 5 crores, with not much additional earnings for the rest of its run.
