Diesel power, with its superb fuel efficiency and effortless torque delivery has been an attractive alternative to regular gasoline engines. It seemed perfect for large SUVs and sport sedans – until dieselgate happened in 2015. Volkswagen was caught purposefully lying about pollution levels, only proving that diesel engines were no longer the best option. Yet both Jaguar and Land Rover releases nearly all of their models using diesel engines due to cheaper prices than gas equivalents and extremely strong performance numbers.

Tata Motors revealed that a decision would be made within the next couple of weeks; this announcement leads me to believe the announcement will come sooner rather than later.

Certain industry experts speculate about what may happen for Jaguar’s subsidiaries because there are times where brands can go through growth phases too far gone and sometimes there needs to be some major restructuring; but even with all these companies having earned worldwide recognition from BMW, Mercedes and Audi – it seems like Jaguar has managed well enough when competing head on with all three juggernauts.

Jaguar’s sports sedans, the XE, and XF and the big limo the XJ haven’t set sales alight in a world where SUVs are king. The little XE, unleashed to fight the BMW 3-series, spurted ahead for about a year, before stalling roughly one-third of the way to its targeted 100,000 a year annual sales. Luckily Jaguar was able to get back on track with their SUV line when it introduced its F-Pace in 2015 and E-Pace two years later. All this just seemed like too good timing though – people were starting to wonder if Jaguar was doing well because it took away from Land Rover! But luckily Jaguar had an ace up their sleeve with their all electric I-Pace which people seem interested enough that they’ve begun stocking them in stores (hopefully).

Who Owned Jaguar?

Jaguars can trace its roots back to Blackpool, England. It began in 1922 when two friends, William Lyons and William Walmsley, decided to form a sidecar manufacturer. They named it the Swallow Sidecar Company- which was later renamed SS Cars Limited. A year later they started production of their first car- the SS Jaguar – which would go on to become one of most popular vehicles around.

1. In 1945, S.S. Cars changed its name to Jaguar Cars Limited in an effort to improve public awareness of the company.

4. Due to financial distress, the British Leyland Motor Corporation was nationalized in 1975. In 1984 Jaguar was made an independent company.

What is Jaguar?

When Tata Motors begins cutting costs on sedaes like the XE and XF – there may come a time when they are too expensive for purchase. This leaves Jaguars only hope in the US being the J-Pace which is set to debut within three years. There are also speculations that Jaguar might be switching to becoming an all-electric brand, while there are rumors that they will either be selling themselves off or partnering with Groupe PSA or even a Chinese company. With the recent partnership forged between them and BMW, this would hint at where partnerships may take them in the future. Ralf Speth, who is set to retire soon as JLR’s CEO, has said before that he believes they can stand alone if need be – but they must form partnerships if they want to survive against bigger competitors who have a significant cost advantage over them such as Germany and Japan.

After sitting at the helm of German CAR – one of world’s top automotive research institutions – Professor Dudenhoeffer has seen it all. He says Tata Motors is currently doing what they can do to save Jaguar, but this isn’t enough and serious decisions will have to be made soon. What we need now is to cut production and layoffs during periods of low demand, but that’s not going to solve anything, he says.

So far his suggestion seems sound; maybe an agreement between Tata Motors and BMW would create a better business model for both brands? But Groupe PSA – which includes Peugeot, Citroen, Opel & Vauxhall – isn’t the answer either.Jaguar needs innovation- not cost cuts, he said. Tavares would put Jaguars on Opel platforms, and this just won’t work out well- like it did with Ford.

Ford purchased Jaguar in 1999 and Land Rover in 2000 before they were sold to Tata Motors in 2008.

Jaguar will survive

Dudenhoeffer believes that Jaguar will survive given all factors are equal.

Cooperation and reducing development costs are important for its survival, said Dudenhoeffer. If we can pull this off, then there is a good chance of making it out alive. It would be really great if we could work something out with BMW; but I feel that won’t happen anytime soon. After September Speth leaves – he was hired from BMW- things might become a little more difficult.

David Bailey, Professor of Business Economics at Birmingham University said Jaguar must find a niche for itself as the sporty and electric vehicle producer in the market. I think JLR has been trying to do too much, using 4 or 5 different platforms while a manufacturer like Volvo uses only 2 and is not trying to compete across the board, Bailey said.

Jaguar needs to go after people who are looking for premium-quality vehicles with an emphasis on energy efficiency, which they’re already doing with models such as the XJ. Despite China’s recovery from coronavirus being slower than that of Europe’s – it was unavoidable that Chinese automakers would eventually look towards acquisitions. Groupe PSA might be interested but he still believes Jaguar can succeed if they keep going down this road.

I feel Tata will keep Jaguar alive with a reduced product line-up and lots of cuts, Wormald said. The only solution, if there is one at all, would be to make them more niche. They can’t compete against Audi or BMW because they are bigger corporations than Jaguar. There’s no point in trying to compete with those brands when it comes to production scale or dealer networks – they’ve got too many disadvantages. But they do have a really strong brand left, that’s been deeply established as being associated with racing.
