About Whitney Museum
At first the Whitney Museum of American Art was called the Whitney. This is an art museum in Manhattan. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the museum, after whom it is named.
The museum is devoted to collecting American art throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. It houses both early American works and contemporary pieces in its permanent collection. It has a comprehensive collection of more than 25,000 sculptures, paintings, films, videos, drawings, prints, and photographs in old and new media.
There are more than 3500 artists whose works are on display in the museum. The museum emphasizes the art of living legends and emerging artists. The museum also conducts annual and biennial art exhibitions which are an excellent opportunity for the younger generation artists.
Until 2014, the Museum of the City of New York was housed in a 945 Madison Avenue building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It was designed by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton-Smith. The Museum was closed for renovations in October 2014 and moved to a new building designed by Renzo Piano at 99 Gansevoort Street in the West Village of Lower Manhattan.
It reopened in the year 2015 on the 1st of May. It also includes an excellent auditorium, four large terraces; all of these connect to the outer staircases.
