Declared a project elephant site due to its concentration of large mammals, this reserve also houses tigers – though they are less common than elephants and deer. 23. Karapuzha Dam:

Karapuzha Dam is one of India’s most important dams and the largest earth-made structure. It was built on the Karapuzha River, a tributary of the Kabini River, serving as an irrigation source for nearby areas in Wayanad District. The construction began back in 1977 after which it took ten years to complete, being 28 meters high with a width of 625 meters at its base. Once it was finally opened, tourists were able to take a boat ride through an aquarium that made it possible for them to explore all there is about this place up close.

29. Chain Tree:

There is an untold story about the Chain Tree and its history – lost in time. Stories say that Karthinadan, a local tribesperson from Wayanad, who helped build the road which lead up to the ghats with British assistance (and was eventually shot for being faithful), had his soul captured by the spirit of this tree. Legend has it that before all this took place, he assisted the Portuguese to take over Wayanad from within India. But when all seemed lost for him and for Portugal – only then did he switch sides – but alas! Yet still, he could not escape death at hands of those whom he once called friends. The priest chained him inside this great tree after he died so that every passerby would know what happened here today.
