Not the fanfare of John Williams, not the Death Star, not the screams of Chewbacca, not even the convoluted grammar of Master Yoda. Lightsabers, or lightsabers, are the most recognizable symbol of the Star Wars saga. A weapon that distinguishes noble Jedi Knights from their enemies the Sith, which first appeared in Episode IV, A New Hope, captivating millions of viewers around the world.

Since that first appearance, in which a young Luke wielded the blade of light before the venerable gaze of the old Obi-Wan, many are the lightsabers that have paraded in the series, movies and video games of Star Wars … and very diverse .

The double-edged Darth Maul, Kylo Ren’s medieval-style cross hilt, the unusual black lightsaber or Ahsoka Tano’s, more similar to daggers because of their curved handle. In what has also been more and more variety is in the colors, which are derived from the Kyber crystals with which they have been made and their “spiritual chemistry” with the possessor of the weapon.

At first it was simple: red for the Sith (the bad guys) and blue or green for the Jedi. But then Mace Windu appeared with his purple lightsaber … and broke the deck.

We have also seen them white, orange and even silver and gold. And it is that the color of the leaf is more important than it seems and its choice goes far beyond mere aesthetic issues.

THE KYBER CRYSTALS AND THEIR COMMUNION WITH THE JEDI

The most widespread opinion is that the colors of the different sabers reflected the personality of the characters who wield them, since, remember, a Jedi must, as part of his training, make his own lightsaber and personally select the crystal from which will be formed. And it is that the heart of the laser swords is a Kyber crystal, a type of mineral sensitive to the Force.

The hilt of their sabers contains mechanisms from which the Force contained in these crystals is concentrated and projected, then forming the blade of light of one color or another, depending on the chosen crystal. But it will be the crystal, which is initially colorless, which will reveal its true nature after being attuned to its owner. That is, it is the contact, its connection with the Jedi (or Sith) that turns the mineral of one color or another.

As for what these colors represent, there are several theories about each of them, but their meaning, based on what is shown in the movies, series, video games and novels of the saga, could be the following:

    BLUE

This is one of the most common colors for Jedi Knights; represents righteousness, fighting prowess, and bravery. It is the color used by the Jedi Guardians in the days of the Old Order.

    GREEN

It is the other of the most common colors and represents concord, harmony and wisdom. They are commonly used by the wisest and highest ranking Jedi like Yoda or Qui-Gon Jinn. It was also taken as a symbol of peace, causing Jedi consuls to generally use this lightsaber color.

    RED

It is the usual color of the Sith that represents their evil, their anger and, also, their torment. In fact, through their corrupted will the Sith do not establish connection with the crystals, without bending them to the point of making them “bleed”. Hence his eye color, an unnatural color for the Kyber.

    PURPLE

A very rare color used by the Jedi, specifically by Mace Windu, who finds its very earthly explanation in the fact that it was the favorite color of Samuel L. Jackson, the actor who played the character. However, in the Expanded Universe this color indicated moral ambiguity, since purple is a combination of red and blue, therefore, it represented that the user showed some affinity with both sides of the Force.

    YELLOW

While they are not as common as greens or blues, they are not as rare as purples and have already appeared several times in the Star Wars universe. It is, for example, the color of the weapons of the Jedi Temple Guards on Coruscant that carry double-edged spears of light with their yellow blades.

But this color took on a new dimension and meaning with the end of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker where Rey wields a yellow saber built by herself after learning that she was Palpatine’s granddaughter and, after killing the evil Sith lord, declaring herself Skywalker of adoption. Thus, despite the fact that the young Jedi has the blood of the Palpatine in her veins, her training was carried out by the Skywalkers, this being the last name she chooses at the end of the end.

Thus, it can be stated that Rey is Sith by birth and Jedi by choice, a dichotomy that fulfills the legendary prophecy of the Star Wars universe. And the union of the two sides of the Force, the darkness of the Palpatines and the light of the Skywalkers, embodied in Rey could not have been represented better than through a yellow lightsaber, a color resulting from the combination of red in the Sith and the green of the Jedi. The yellow would mean, therefore, that longed for balance.

    ORANGE

Sometimes this color has been used by the Jedi with a marked dark and strong character and of great physical power. But it can also have other meanings since, for example, on the planet Naboo, color is a symbol of birth and renewal. It is also a color used by Jedi sentinels, powerful and strong in combat and also very skilled in negotiations.

    GOLDEN

A very unusual color that indicates justice, compassion and also wisdom. It is carried by Jedi totally committed to the light side of the Force.
