We all are well aware and have ideas about manga, but have you any idea or familiarity with other East Asian comics? If yes, then manhwa and manhua are known to you. If not, then you are at the right place.

Today, we will discuss the difference between manga, manhua, & manhwa. Although these all are comics, they came from the eastern side of the world. But that has the taste and uniqueness. Once you look under the surface, you can sense the change in nature.

    Manga, Manhua & Manhwa: Origin

Before starting our journey, let’s break down these three terms and examine their origins.

Manga, manhwa, and manhua are terms derived from the Chinese term “manhua.” The “manhua” translates roughly as “impromptu sketches.” Manga comes from Japan and became popular in the mid-20th century. Many producers have made the transition from manga to another primary Japanese art form, which is also known as “Anime.” Moreover, most “anime” is based on original manga publications, such as the Smash-Hit Fullmetal Series and Demon Slayer Mugen.

While “Manhwa” achieved its development during the Japanese Occupation of Korea. But, because of strict censorship laws during the mid-1960s, “manhwa” experienced a vast decline in the graph. However, the popularity of “manhwa” soared in the 21st century with the advent of webtoons. Digital “manhwa” is published weekly on websites such as “Daum Webtoon and Naver Webtoon.” You can also get exciting news on Manhwa; only you need to Webtoon xyz.

However, “Manhua” hails from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and gained popularity in the early 20th century. But “Manhua” had politically driven stories. The 1904 “Current Affairs Comics,” which provided commentary on the war and politics of the day, was the first manhua to be published.

Over the following two decades, this new art form started to take root, and Shanghai Sketch—the first manhua magazine—was established in 1928.

Manga, Manhua, & Manhwa: What’s The Difference?

Now, we will talk about the differences and what they are. Here, we are demystifying the critical difference. So, if you go to a comic store next time, you will know exactly what to look for.

Manga, Manhwa, and Manhua have their unique art styles and layouts. Manga is produced traditionally, which means in black and white form. But the thing is, “manhwa” is also black and white, but there is a cache of “manhwa” published horizontally, which is more like

American and European comics. “Manhua,” on the other hand, is published in color. While these art pieces have things to keep in mind that “Manga” & “Manhua” are read in a right-to-left and top-to-bottom layout, this thing is different for “Manhwa.” “Manhwa” is read from top-to-bottom and left to right.

Manhwa and Manhua in digital format are read vertically with endless scrolling. It is challenging to portray movement and the passage of time in printed manga, but this feature enables creators to do so. Furthermore, digital manhwa’s use of color gives it a visual depth lacking in printed manhwa and manga. Despite their many similarities, manga, manhwa, and manhua are distinguished by specific differences. Whether you enjoy manga, manhwa, or manhua, these comics’ development and the variety of storytelling approaches they employ make them an intriguing aspect of East Asian popular culture.

The Key Differences Between Manga, Manhua, And Manhwa

Here, we make a summary for you what’s the differences between these East Asian publications.

    • Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong are the origins of manhua, while manga is native to Japan and manhwa is formed in South Korea. Manhua varies according to its place of birth, while manga is read from right to left. Manhwa is read from left to right.
    • While manhwa and manhua comics have more realistic characters, manga artists depict characters in a highly stylized way.
    • Manga is published almost exclusively in black and white, but manhwa and manhua are often available in full color, primarily online.
    • Manga volumes are frequently created by compiling several magazine issues into chapters. On the other hand, Manhua and manhwa are typically stand-alone works released once a week, either in print or on online comic platforms.

    Conclusion

Without a doubt, manga has taken the world by storm, but Manhwa and Manhua are also becoming well-known in the international comic book scene. Although we’ve found that these three East Asian exports have a lot in common, they also differ in some pretty significant ways.
