Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior sets out to be a successful movie at the box office. On Sunday, it accomplished this goal and earned Rs. 26.08 crores more than what was expected. This is an incredible number for a film that only garnered Rs. 15.10 crores during its opening weekend (including Friday). From there until Sunday, Tanhaji continued to increase in popularity due to Om Raut’s outstanding directing skills; bringing the film’s current earnings to about Rs 62 crore rupees (or roughly $US 10 million).
Yesterday was Lohri; making today– Monday–a partial holiday in many regions of India. Tanhaji could potentially earn even higher numbers tomorrow because people will have time off work while they celebrate Monday morning with family members and friends over a festive meal usually consisting of traditional sweets made out of ground roasted wheat flour combined with sugar or jaggery called Laddu.
One would expect the numbers to stay in the double digit zone today. This means a fall of less than 50% is required when compared to Friday which was at Rs. 15.10 crores. Given the kind of appreciation that this movie has gained so far, it should be possible as well. That said, if there ends up being any number much higher than Rs. 10 crores, it will also good news for this film and once again help us predict its future success because we can’t really know what might happen yet until we see how things turn out come Saturday morning.
