The long awaited movie Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar was finally released in theaters after a tight schedule delay. Featured alongside Katrina Kaif and made to include appearances from Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn the film became one of India’s biggest box office movies. It had been several months since the last Indian movie, so anticipation was unprecedented leading up to this release date.
In this box office report, we’ll look at the opening day earnings for Sonyavanshi when compared to Akshay Kumar’s past performances. After collecting Rs. 26.29 crores on its first day of release, Sonyavanshi is now Kumar’s third highest-grossing opening day ever! And although it doesn’t beat his previous work – Mission Mangal which grossed Rs 29.16 crores- it does outperform his other films like Gold which only earned a total of Rs 25.25 crores, Kesari with just 21 crores made; Singh Is Bllng found success with 20 cr., 2.0 claimed 20 gr., Good News earned 17 gr., Housefull 4 bringing in 16 cr., and Housefull 3 making a mere 15 crore!
Trade experts believe that the 50% occupancy restrictions in markets like Maharashtra-which typically account for about 20% of a movie’s earnings-is at least partly responsible for its lacklustre performance compared to Akshay Kumar’s other releases. This is because states like Punjab where there are no limitations on how many people can watch the movie allow it to earn more money.
