Records are being made left and right thanks to Sooryavanshi! The film has already brought in Rs. 26.29 crores on its first day, making it the fifth highest grossing Diwali opener ever (only behind Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindustan, Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year, Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo).
It may even have passed Golmaal Again if the release date wasn’t pushed back past Friday morning so there was less time for ticket sales this weekend. Interestingly enough, these two films are actually only number one when they come out around Diwali time – because all other high grossing Hindi movies were released between 2015-2018 while Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was only released in 2016 but still managed a spot at number ten!
This is how the Top-10 Diwali openers look like:
Thugs of Hindostan [2018] – Rs. 50.75 crores
Happy New Year [2014] – Rs. 42.60 crores
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo [2015] – Rs. 40.35 crores
Golmaal Again [2017] – Rs. 30.14 crores
Sooryavanshi [2021] – Rs. 26.29 crores
Krrish 3 [2013] – Rs. 25.50 crores
Housefull 4 [2019] – Rs. 19.08 crores
Jab Tak Hai Jaan [2012] – Rs. 15.23 crores
Ra. One [2011] – Rs. 15 crores
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil [2016] – Rs. 13.30 crores
This also brings into perspective how big actually the Rohit Shetty directed film has turned out to be because before its release, it was never about the records but about survival. It could easily have opened just around the 15 crores mark and barely made it to the Top-10. Still, not many would have minded that (or even get surprised) since there was huge uncertainty around whether audiences would step into theatres. After all, it was 20 months after Baaghi 3 [March 2020] that a big film was releasing at a pan-India level and one couldn’t be sure of anything.
However, the miracle has indeed happened, and now it has to be seen how big the journey of Sooryavanshi is going to be from this point on.
