The star–studded Shamshera featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt has unfortunately started on a slow note at the box office. Early estimates indicate that the film garnered a mediocre collection between Rs. 9.50 and 11 crores on its opening day. This dismal result raises serious concerns about the film’s future success and if it will be able to surpass the lukewarm response of YRF’s previous venture, Prithviraj, featuring Akshay Kumar, which turned out to be a colossal failure.
The beginning of Shamshera was quite slow, regardless of the makers settling for a low ticket price. Evidently, the viewers were not really intrigued to view the movie. The momentum of the film was lost with poor word-of-mouth, along with the unpleasant reviews. People expected the walk-in audience to be a great help, but even that failed. Mumbai region performed the best, however, it was followed by some pockets in Gujarat and Rajasthan, however, it was still underwhelming compared to the predicted amount of Rs. 12-13 crores.
Shamshera’s release has certainly taken the Bollywood world by surprise as such a highly star–studded and costly film should have fared much better than it did. Being a front–loaded film, it is likely that it will find it difficult to hold up in the coming days. Unpromising reviews don’t exclude the probability of an even further decrease on Sunday. Thus, it can be assumed that the film will most probably achieve an opening weekend total of between Rs. 30 to 35 crores, a figure that unfortunately falls short of expectations.
The movie was expected to overtake Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 on its first day, yet the horror comedy has continued to be the most successful opening of the year, and it remains to be seen whether any of the subsequent releases can outdo it and become the top Hindi opening of 2022.
