            Saudi Vaccination Mandates for Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimage

    Across the globe, every country has set of guidelines according to the vaccination mandates. Similarly, Saudi Arabia has established vaccination mandates for the pilgrims that would be performing Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage. With the outbreak of many viruses and diseases it is mandatory to take precautionary measures and to get oneself vaccinated to control the outbreak. In recent years, covid-19 emerged with its catastrophic consequences, leading to a pandemic. It not only resulted in numerous deaths, but it also affected the globe economically leading to downfall. In the present day, to ensure a smooth and hassle-free pilgrimage it is essential to keep an eye on the updated vaccination mandates for the pilgrims.     Covid-19 Vaccine

Similarly, pilgrimage for Hajj and Umrah it was declared mandatory to be vaccinated twice to be accepted as a vaccinated individual. Saudi Arabia accepts various forms of vaccines for Umrah and hajj pilgrims that are Pfizer/BioNTech, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sputnik.V, Janssen, Moderna, Sinopharm, Sinovac etc. These vaccines are to be taken in two doses. Proof of vaccination with two doses of any of these vaccines, i.e. approved by KSA ministry of health is required.

    Yellow Fever Vaccine

    Pilgrims from the country where this yellow fever is epidemic must give a proof of vaccination against yellow fever. Yellow fever is a virus caused by a bite of specific kind of infected mosquito. This disease is commonly epidemic in tropical regions where these specific kinds of mosquitos are found such as regions of Africa and central or South America. So, Pilgrims of these countries must vaccinate themselves before booking their Ramadan Umrah Packages from USA or other North American countries. Pilgrims from these regions, which are at the danger of being infected by this virus must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The certificate should depict that the vaccination was taken at least 10 days (about 1 and a half weeks) or up to 10 years before the arrival at the border.

    Meningococcal Meningitis

    Meningococcal Meningitis is a bacterial infection of the protective membranes which cover the brain and spinal cord, known as meninges. This is a contagious disease which is typically spread to other individuals through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the infected person’s respiratory secretion. This disease is typically found in the “meningitis belt” in Sub-Saharan Africa. Pilgrims must receive a Meningococcal vaccine within a specific timeframe before their planned arrival. Vaccination with a quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine is accepted if received within the last three years meanwhile, vaccination with quadrivalent conjugate vaccine is accepted if received within the last five years.

    Polio Vaccine

    Polio is a highly contagious viral infection that attacks a person, often leading to paralysis. Pilgrims from polio epidemic countries must receive one dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV) regardless of age, before departure and another dosage upon the arrival in Saudi Arabia. All visitors under the age of 15 are required to receive one dosage of OPV at border points upon arrival. Additionally, polio vaccination certificate is required as a proof at least 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months) before departure for the application of entry visa.

    Flu Shot

    Flu shot is not mandatory by the Saudi health ministry, but it is recommended that international pilgrims receive a seasonal influenza vaccine before arriving in KSA, especially for those pilgrims who are at a higher risk of severe influenza complications such as pregnant women, children, elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

For the winter season there is another vaccination plan and for the winter there is another vaccination plan. We have discussed the general vaccines which a pilgrim should apply.

    Covid-19 was the virus which was found excessive in the last couple of years but its vaccination is still compulsory for the Umrah Pilgrimage. According the recent news, we have come to know that Corona is one of the viruses which can be spread all over the world in the minimal time period. There are various vaccines which are suggested by the Saudi Ministry of Health. Yellow Fever is one of the virus which is spread by a virus named Yellow fever virus and you should vaccinate yourself before booking the Umrah. Meningococcal Meningitis is an infection which is caused by bacteria and can be spread and it is compulsory to vaccinate yourself before booking Umrah. In most of the countries, Polio Vaccines are vaccinated in the Childhood. Flu Shot is one of the vaccination which is not mandatory by the Saudi Health Ministry but it is recommended by most of travel experts.
