Action thriller Runway 34 directed by Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan failed to make a good opening according to early estimates. The film opened in between Rs. 3 crore to 3.5 crore on the first day at Indian Box Office, with most of its business coming from multiplexes despite possessing an occupancy rate of 15% only at premiere cinemas (average movie going experience). Other movies that made opening days revenue of similar or less were Satyameva Jayate 2, Chandigarh Kare Aashqiui and last weeks release Jersey – all three respectively earning less than Runway 34. It is shocking how this film could even disappoint the industry after expectations were very high for it, estimating the first days earnings up to 5 crores maximum which did not materialise because Runway 34 opened somewhere close to 4 crores.
It was a disappointing first weekend for the film whether it be at Jersey or now Runway 34. Movies need to make a big jump of 100% every single day to have a chance at reaching 50 crores by the end of its run. If this doesn’t happen then even during Eid on weekends, there will be no hope for success. The opening weekend has already been lost since movies need 18 crores to reach 50 crores but if they don’t make those crucial jumps on Friday, Saturday and Sunday then nothing can bring success.
