Panipat had a major underperformance at the box office in its opening week, only just managing to cross Rs. 25 crores. This lackluster amount would have been considered meager even if it was solely collected during the weekend.
Arjun Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Sanjay Dutt’s highly anticipated movie was outfitted with an impressive promotional campaign. Unfortunately, it was unable to capture the public’s imagination despite generating favorable reviews. Word-of-mouth spread too slowly, which enabled Pati Patni Aur Woh to maintain a clear lead in terms of box office draw.
The film’s success appears limited to this area, with an expected upper-end of only Rs.3-4 crore additional collections. This results in the lifetime collections not exceeding Rs.30 crore; a result that is far from satisfactory. Ashutosh Gowariker produced an impressive picture, yet his next major production will be what it takes for him to achieve a significant breakthrough.
