नाग पंचमी व्रत कथा
सालों पहले एक नगर में किसी सेठ के सात बेटे रहते थे। सभी की शादी सेठ ने समय रहते करवा दी। सातों बहु मिलकर घर का काम भी किया करती थीं। उन सभी में से सेठ की सबसे छोटी बहु खूब संस्कारी थी।
एक दिन यूं ही काम करते हुए घर की बड़ी बहु ने अपनी देवरानियों से कहा कि घर को लीपने के लिए पीली मिट्टी नहीं है। जंगल जाकर मिट्टी लानी होगी। जेठानी के ऐसा कहते ही सभी उसके साथ घर लीपने के लिए मिट्टी लाने के लिए निकल गए। सभी खुरपी से मिट्टी निकाल ही रहे थे कि तभी सबसे बड़ी वाली बहु को एक नाग नजर आया।
उसे मारने के लिए जैसे ही बड़ी वाली बहु ने खुरपी उठाई, वैसे ही सबसे छोटी बहु ने कहा, ‘जेठानी जी, इसे मत मारिए। इसकी कोई गलती नहीं है। जंगल तो इसका घर है।’ अपनी देवरानी की बात मानकर उसने नाग को कुछ नहीं किया। तभी उस छोटी बहु ने नाग से कहा कि आप एक जगह पर अलग से बैठ जाइए हम तबतक मिट्टी खोदते हैं। फिर आपके पास आएंगे।

इतना कहकर सभी मिट्टी निकालने लगे और कुछ देर बाद घर चले गए। सभी के दिमाग से नाग वाली बात निकल गई थी। अगले दिन छोटी बहु को अचानक से याद आया कि उसने नाग को इंतजार करने के लिए कहा था। वो तुरंत अपनी सभी जेठानियों को अपने साथ लेकर नाग के पास चली गई।
वहां देखा तो वो नाग उन सभी के इंतजार में उसी जगह पर बैठा हुआ था। नाग को देखते ही छोटी बहु ने प्यार से कहा, ‘भैया, कल हम लोग आपके पास आना भूल गए थे। उस बात के लिए आप हमें माफ कर दीजिए।’
जवाब में नाग बोला, ‘तुमने मुझे भाई कहा है, इसलिए मैं तुम्हें दण्ड नहीं दे रहा हूं। नहीं तो अबतक मैं तुम्हें डस चुका होता। आज के बाद में तुम हमेशा के लिए मेरी बहन रहोगी। अब तुम अपने भाई से कोई वरदान मांग लो। मैं तुमसे बहुत खुश हूं।’

इतना सब सुनने के बाद छोटी बहु ने नाग को बोला, ‘मेरा कोई भी सगा भाई नहीं है, इसलिए मैंने आपको भाई कहा था। अब से आप मेरे भाई हो। अब हरदम मेरी रक्षा करना आपका फर्ज है। बस यही वरदान मुझे आपसे चाहिए।’
नाग ने हर कदम पर साथ देने का वादा किया और अपने रास्ते निकल गया। सेठ की सारी बहु भी अपने घर लौट गईं।
कुछ समय बाद नाग इंसान का रूप बनाकर अपनी बहन से मिलने सेठ के घर गया। उसने सेठ से कहा कि मेरी छोटी बहन को बुला दो। वो आपकी छोटी बहु है।

पहले तो उनके मन में हुआ कि बहु का कोई भाई ही नहीं था, ये कहा से आ गया। फिर भी उन्होंने अपनी छोटी बहु को बाहर बुलाया। नाग ने फिर साथ में बहन को अपने घर लेकर जाने की बात की। सेठ ने इसकी भी आज्ञा दे दी।
तभी नाग ने अपनी बहन से पूछा, ‘कहीं तुम मुझे भूल तो नहीं गई हो न? जवाब में बहन बोली, ‘नहीं, भैया मैं आपको बिल्कुल नहीं भूली हूं।’ फिर नाग ने कहा, ‘मैं तुम्हें अपने घर लेकर जा रहा हूं। तुम मेरी पूंछ पकड़कर चलती रहना पीछे।’
उसकी बहन ने वैसा ही किया। कुछ ही देर बाद वो एक बड़े से मकान में पहुंच गए। वहां हर तरफ सोना-चांदी और अन्य कीमती सामान थे। वहां नाग की बहन आराम से कुछ दिनों के लिए रहने लगी।

नाग की मां भी उसे खूब प्यार करती थी। एक दिन नाग की मां ने छोटी बहु को अपने भाई के लिए दूध लेकर जाने के लिए कहा। छोटू बहु ने दूध को गर्म किया और भाई को पीने के लिए दे दिया। अब गर्म दूध पीते ही नाग का मुंह जलने लगा। ये सब देखकर नाग की मां को खूब गुस्सा आया। नाग ने किसी तरह से अपनी मां के गुस्से को शांत किया और बताया कि उसकी बहन को नहीं पता था कि मैं गर्म दूध नहीं पी सकता हूं।
अब नाग के परिवार के साथ कुछ समय बीताने के बाद सेठ की छोटी बहु अपने घर जाने लगी। नाग ने अपनी बहन को खूब सारी दौलत और आभूषण देकर विदा किया।
बहु के साथ घर में इतना सारा धन आते देख सेठ और उसकी जेठानियां हैरान हो गईं।

एक दिन नाग की बहन को घर की बड़ी बहु ने कहा कि तुम अपने भाई से और सोना-चांदी लेकर आओ। उसके पास तो खूब पैसा है, वो तुम्हें मना नहीं करेगा। छोटी बहु ने अपने भाई नाग को यह बात बताई। इसके बारे में पता चलते ही नाग ने अपनी बहन का घर तरह-तरह के आभूषणों से भर दिया।
सभी जेवरातों में से एक हीरे का हार बेशकीमती था। उसे देखते ही हर किसी का मन उसपर आ जाता था। होते-होते उस हीरे की हार की खबर राज्य की रानी तक पहुंची। उसने छोटी बहु से हार लेकर खुद अपने पास रख लिया। दुखी होकर सेठ की छोटी बहु ने अपने भाई को इसके बारे में बताया।
गुस्से में उसके नाग भाई ने रानी के गले के हीरे के हार को नाग बना दिया। इससे डरकर रानी ने एकदम हार को अपने गले से उतारा और सेठ की छोटी बहु को महल बुलवाया। उसके महल पहुंचते ही रानी ने छोटी बहु को बताया कि कैसे हार उसके गले में नाग बन गया था और उससे इसकी वजह पूछने लगी?

तब सेठ की छोटी बहु ने बताया की नाग भाई ने यह हार सिर्फ मुझे पहनने के लिए दिया है। इसे कोई दूसरा इंसान गले में डालेगा, तो यह तुरंत सांप बन जाएगा। इस बात को सही साबित करने के लिए रानी ने सेठ की छोटी बहु को सांप बन चुके हार को पहनने के लिए कहा।
छोटी बहु ने जैसे ही नाग बने हार को गले में डाला, तो वो दोबारा हीरे के हार में बदल गया। महारानी ने ये सब होते हुए खुद अपनी आंखों से देखा और हैरान रह गई। अब उसे सेठ की छोटी बहु की बात पर यकीन हो गया। उसने हार छोटी बहु को अपने साथ लेकर जाने के लिए कहा। इतना सब होने के बाद रानी ने सेठ की छोटी बहु को कुछ सोने की मुद्राएं देकर महल से विदा कर किया।
अब सेठ की छोटी बहु घर में सोने के सिक्के लेकर पहुंची। यह सब देखकर सेठ की बड़ी बहु को जलन होने लगी। उसने सोचा कि क्यों ने ऐसा कुछ किया जाए, जिससे देवरानी परेशान हो जाए।

उसने अपने देवर से पूछा, ‘आखिर तुम्हारी पत्नी को इतने आभूषण, धन ये सब कुछ कैसे मिल रहा है? तुम्हें उस पर ध्यान देना चाहिए। यूं ही तो कोई किसी को इतना सारा धन, जेवरात और सोने के सिक्के नहीं दे देता है। पता करो कि आखिर क्या मामला है।’
भाभी से अपनी पत्नी के बारे में इतना सब सुनने के बाद उसके मन में अपनी पत्नी के लिए शक पैदा हो गया। उसकी हर बात को वो शक भरी निगाहों से देखने लगा। एक दिन इस बारे में उसने अपनी पत्नी से बात की। खुद के लिए अपने पति से ऐसा सब सुनने के बाद वो दुखी हो गई।
उसने सीधे अपने नाग भाई से मुलाकात की और अपने पति द्वारा कही गई सारी बातों के बारे में बता दिया। अपनी दुखी बहन को देखकर नाग को भी गुस्सा आया।
सीधे वो अपनी बहन के पति से मिला और बोला कि अपनी बहन को जेवरात और दूसरे तोहफे मैंने दिए हैं, तुम्हें उस पर किसी भी तरह का शक करने की जरूरत नहीं है। वो बहुत ही अच्छी है और अगर आगे से कभी भी तुमने उसे कुछ गलत कहा या उस पर शक किया, तो मैं तुम्हें जिंदा खा जाऊंगा।
नाग से ये सब सुनने के बाद सेठ के बेटे ने उससे माफी मांगी और कहा कि आज के बाद से मैं ऐसी बातें बिल्कुल भी नहीं करूंगा। आप मेरे ऊपर गुस्सा मत कीजिए। मैं आपकी बहन को किसी तरह का दुख नहीं होने दूंगा। इतना कहकर वो सीधे घर गया और अपनी पत्नी से भी माफी मांगी। उसके बाद दोनों खुशी-खुशी साथ में रहने लगा।
इसी तरह सेठ की छोटी बहु हर तरह की मसीबत में अपने भाई को याद करती और वो उसकी परेशानी को दूर कर देता। इसी तरह नाग पंचमी का त्योहार शुरू हुआ और सभी महिलाएं नाग को अपना भाई मानकर पूजते हुए उन्हें दूध पिलाने लगीं।

कहानी से सीख
नाग पंचमी कथा से दो सीख मिलती है। पहली यह कि किसी दूसरे के भड़काने पर और उनकी बातों से प्रभावित होकर अपने लोगों पर शक नहीं करना चाहिए। दूसरी सीख है कि अच्छा करने और सोचने वालों को उसका सकारात्मक फल जरूर मिलता है।

After some time, the snake took the form of a human and went to Seth’s house to meet his sister. He told Seth to call my younger sister. She is your younger daughter-in-law.

His sister did the same. After some time they reached a big house. There were gold-silver and other valuables everywhere. There Nag’s sister started living comfortably for a few days.

Nag’s mother also loved him very much. One day Nag’s mother asked the younger daughter-in-law to take milk for her brother. Chhotu Bahu heated the milk and gave it to brother to drink. Nag somehow pacified his mother’s anger and told that his sister did not know that I cannot drink hot milk.
Now after spending some time with Nag’s family, Seth’s younger daughter-in-law started going to her home. Nag bid farewell to his sister by giving her a lot of wealth and jewellery.
Seth and his sister-in-law were surprised to see so much money coming to the house with the daughter-in-law.

He took the necklace from the younger daughter-in-law and kept it with himself. Saddened, Seth’s younger daughter-in-law told her brother about it.
In anger, her snake brother turned the diamond necklace around the queen’s neck into a snake. Fearing this, the queen immediately removed the necklace from her neck and called Seth’s younger daughter-in-law to the palace. As soon as she reached the palace, the queen told the younger daughter-in-law how the necklace had become a snake around her neck and asked her the reason for it.

Then Seth’s younger daughter-in-law told that Nag Bhai had given this necklace only to me to wear. If another person hugs it, it will immediately become a snake. To prove this right, the queen asked Seth’s younger daughter-in-law to wear the necklace that had become a snake.
As soon as the younger daughter-in-law put the snake necklace around her neck, it again turned into a diamond necklace. The queen saw all this happening with her own eyes and was surprised. Now he is convinced of Seth’s younger daughter-in-law. He asked the younger daughter-in-law to take the necklace with him. After all this, the queen sent Seth’s younger daughter-in-law away from the palace by giving some gold coins.
Now Seth’s younger daughter-in-law reached home with gold coins. Seeing all this, Seth’s elder daughter-in-law started getting jealous. He thought that why should he do such a thing, which would upset the sister-in-law.

Directly he met his sister’s husband and said that I have given jewelery and other gifts to his sister, you do not need to doubt him in any way. She is very nice and if ever again you say anything wrong to her or doubt her, I will eat you alive.
After hearing all this from Nag, Seth’s son apologized to him and said that from today onwards I will not do such things at all. Don’t be angry with me. I will not let your sister be hurt in any way. Having said this, he went straight home and apologized to his wife as well. After that both started living happily together.
Similarly, Seth’s younger daughter-in-law used to remember her brother in every kind of trouble and he would remove her trouble. This is how the festival of Nag Panchami started and all the women worshiped the snake as their brother and started feeding him milk.
