It is becoming increasingly more uncommon for audiences to have the luxury of watching 4 to 5 remarkable films at once. Yet, the ongoing week is evidently making an exception, as there are new releases Malang and Shikara arriving together, as well as Jawaani Jaaneman still being screened from last week and Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior remaining popular.
In spite of the large number of theatres currently screening them, the combined ticket sales of these four films have only just surpassed the 10 crore mark. Sadly, the audience turnout has not been as expected.
Despite all other movies, Malang achieved a grand success, earning Rs. 6.71 crores at the box office, significantly exceeding expectations of Rs. 4-5 crores. This is a considerable achievement for Aditya Roy Kapur as his last few releases had not made a great impression. Going forward, today’s trend will indicate whether director Mohit Suri’s movie will be a success or not. With any luck, it should be a cause of celebration in the coming days.
After taking a hiatus from film making, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra has released Shikara, collecting a surprisingly higher amount of Rs. 1.20 crore at the box office than the predicted Rs. 50 lakhs. Reports indicate that there will likely be a jump in collections, giving the film a fair start.
Meanwhile, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior shows no signs of slowing down, bringing in an impressive Rs. 1.15 crores on its fifth Friday. It is truly remarkable that the movie continues to draw numbers close to the Rs. 1 crore mark. With the current standing of Rs. 260.67 crores, the film still looks to aim for a total lifetime collection of Rs. 275 crores. Though, it will heavily depend on the performance it makes today and tomorrow to get to the desired mark.
With regards to its ambition to hit the Rs. 30 crores milestone, Jawaani Jaaneman has demonstrated impressive staying power on the second Friday, gathering Rs. 1.04 crores, pushing the total earnings to Rs. 21.25 crores. The first milestone the Saif Ali Khan–starrer needs to accomplish is the Rs. 25 crores benchmark by the conclusion of the second weekend. Once that target is achieved, the movie will then be well on its way to reaching its Rs. 30 crores ambition.
