महाभारत की कहानी: भक्त ध्रुव की कथा
एक बार की बात है, राजा उत्तानपाद थे और उनकी दो रानियां थीं। एक रानी का नाम सुनीति और दूसरी रानी का नाम सुरुचि था। सुनीति बड़ी रानी और सुरुचि छोटी रानी थी। रानी सुनीति के पुत्र का नाम ध्रुव और रानी सुरुचि के पुत्र का नाम उत्तम था। राजा उत्तानपाद का रूझान छोटी रानी सुरुचि के तरफ ज्यादा था, क्योंकि वो दिखने में काफी सुंदर थीं, लेकिन रानी सुरुचि अपनी सुंदरता पर काफी घमंड करती थीं। वहीं, बड़ी रानी सुनीति का स्वभाव सुरुचि से बिल्कुल अलग था। रानी सुनीति काफी शांत और समझदार स्वभाव की थीं। राजा का सुरुचि के तरफ अधिक प्रेम देखते हुए रानी सुनीति दुखी रहती थीं। इसलिए, वह अपना ज्यादा से ज्यादा वक्त भगवान की पूजा-अर्चना करते हुए बिताती थीं।

एक दिन सुनीति के पुत्र ध्रुव अचानक अपने पिता राजा उत्तानपाद के गोद में जाकर बैठ गए। वह अपने पिता के गोद में बैठकर खेल ही रहे थे कि वहां छोटी रानी सुरुचि पहुंच गईं। राजा के गोद में ध्रुव को बैठे देखकर रानी सुरुचि को गुस्सा आ गया।
रानी ने ध्रुव को राजा के गोद से नीचे उतारते हुए कहा, ‘तुम राजा के गोद में नहीं बैठ सकते हो, राजा की गोद और सिहांसन पर सिर्फ मेरे पुत्र उत्तम का अधिकार है।’ यह सुनकर ध्रुव को बहुत बुरा लगा। ध्रुव वहां से रोते हुए अपनी मां के पास चला गया। ध्रुव को रोता देख मां काफी चिंतित हो गई और ध्रुव से उसके रोने का कारण पूछा। ध्रुव ने रोते हुए सारी बात बताई। ध्रुव की बात सुनकर मां के आंखों में भी आंसू आ गए। ध्रुव को चुप कराते हुए सुनीति ने कहा, ‘भगवान् की आराधना में बहुत शक्ति है। अगर सच्चे मन से आराधना की जाए, तो भगवान से तुम्हें पिता की गोद और सिंहासन दोनों मिल सकते हैं।’ मां की बात सुनकर ध्रुव ने निर्णय कर लिया कि वह सच्चे मन से भगवान की आराधना करेंगे।

ध्रुव अपने महल से भगवान की प्रार्थना करने जगलों की तरफ निकल पड़े। उन्हें रास्ते में ऋषि नारद मिले। छोटे-से ध्रुव को जंगलों की तरफ जाता देख नारद ने उन्हें रोका। नारद ने उनसे पूछा, ‘तुम जंगलों की तरफ क्यों जा रहे हो?’ ध्रुव ने उन्हें बताया कि वो भगवान का ध्यान करने जा रहे हैं। ध्रुव की बात सुनकर नारद ने उन्हें समझाकर राजमहल वापस भेजने की कोशिश की, लेकिन ध्रुव ने उनकी एक न सुनी।
ध्रुव के निर्णय के कारण नारद ने ध्रुव को ‘ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय’ मंत्र का जाप करने को कहा। इसके बाद ध्रुव जंगल में जाकर इस मंत्र का जाप करने लगे। उधर नारद ने महाराज उत्तानपाद को ध्रुव के बारे में बताया। बेटे के बारे में सुनकर महाराज का मन चिंतित हो गया। वह ध्रुव को वापस लाना चाहते थे, लेकिन नारद ने कहा ध्रुव प्रार्थना में डूब गया है और अब वह वापस नहीं आएगा।

उधर ध्रुव कठोर तपस्या में लगे रहें। कई दिन और महीने गुजर गए, लेकिन ध्रुव प्रार्थना करते रहे। इस बीच ध्रुव की भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान हरि ध्रुव के सामने प्रकट हुए। भगवान हरि ने ध्रुव को वरदान देते हुए कहा, ‘तुम्हारी तपस्या से हम बहुत प्रसन्न है, तुम्हें राज सुख मिलेगा। साथ ही तुम्हारा नाम और तुम्हारी भक्ति हमेशा के लिए जानी जाएगी।’ यह कहकर भगवान ने ध्रुव को राजमहल की तरफ भेज दिया। भगवान के दर्शन पाकर ध्रुव भी बहुत खुश हुए और उन्हें प्रणाम कर महल की तरफ चले गए। बेटे को महल वापस आते देख राजा खुश हो गए और उनको अपना पूरा राज्य सौंप दिया। भगवान हरि के वरदान से भक्त ध्रुव का नाम अमर हो गया और आज भी उन्हें आसमान में सबसे ज्यादा चमकने वाले तारे ‘ध्रुव तारे’ के नाम से याद किया जाता है।

इस कहानी से यही सीख मिलती है कि अगर धैर्य और सच्चे मन से कोई प्रार्थना करे, तो उसकी इच्छा जरूरी पूरी होती है।

Once upon a time, there was King Uttanpad and he had two queens. One queen’s name was Suniti and the other queen’s name was Suruchi. Suniti was the elder queen and Suruchi was the younger queen. Queen Suniti’s son’s name was Dhruv and Queen Suruchi’s son’s name was Uttam. King Uttanpad was more inclined towards the younger queen Suruchi, because she was very beautiful to look at, but Queen Suruchi was very proud of her beauty. At the same time, the nature of elder queen Suniti was completely different from Suruchi. Rani Suniti was very calm and sensible. Queen Suniti used to feel sad seeing the king’s love towards Suruchi. Therefore, she used to spend most of her time worshiping the Lord.

One day Suniti’s son Dhruv suddenly went and sat on the lap of his father King Uttanpad. He was playing sitting on his father’s lap when the little queen Suruchi reached there. Queen Suruchi got angry seeing Dhruv sitting on the king’s lap.
The queen took Dhruva down from the king’s lap and said, ‘You cannot sit on the king’s lap, only my son Uttam has the right on the king’s lap and throne.’ Dhruva felt very bad after hearing this. Dhruv went from there crying to his mother. Mother became very worried seeing Dhruv crying and asked Dhruv the reason for his crying. Dhruv told the whole thing while crying. Tears welled up in mother’s eyes after listening to Dhruv. Silenced Dhruv, Suniti said, ‘There is a lot of power in worshiping God. If you worship with a true heart, you can get both father’s lap and throne from God.’ After listening to his mother, Dhruv decided that he would worship God with a true heart.

Dhruv went out of his palace towards the jungles to pray to God. He met sage Narada on the way. Seeing little Dhruva going towards the forests, Narad stopped him. Narad asked him, ‘Why are you going to the forests?’ Dhruva told him that he was going to meditate on God. After listening to Dhruva, Narad tried to convince him to send him back to the palace, but Dhruva did not listen to him.
Because of Dhruva’s decision, Narada asked Dhruva to chant the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’. After this Dhruv went to the forest and started chanting this mantra. On the other side Narad told Maharaj Uttanpad about Dhruva. Maharaj’s mind got worried after hearing about the son. He wanted to bring Dhruva back, but Narada said that Dhruva is engrossed in prayer and will not come back now.

On the other hand, Dhruv should be engaged in harsh penance. Many days and months passed, but Dhruva kept on praying. In the meantime Lord Hari appeared in front of Dhruva after being pleased with Dhruva’s devotion. Lord Hari gave a boon to Dhruva and said, ‘ We are very happy with your penance, you will get royal happiness. Also your name and your devotion will be known forever. Saying this, God sent Dhruv towards the palace. Dhruv was also very happy after seeing God and went towards the palace after saluting him. The king was happy to see the son coming back to the palace and handed over his entire kingdom to him. By the boon of Lord Hari, the name of the devotee Dhruv became immortal and even today he is remembered by the name of ‘Dhruv Tare’, the most shining star in the sky.

Lesson from the story
