Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh and Charmme Kaur teamed up to produce the movie Liger which released in theatres on August 25th. Charmme recently discussed her views on the success of films at the box office. She suggested that given the surplus of accessible content for viewers, film creators should strive to make motion pictures that attract them enough to visit cinemas. To illustrate her point she highlighted how movies like Kartikeya 2, Sita Ramam, and Bimbisara achieved commercial success.
While discussing this with the Free Press Journal, Charmme Kaur commented, “With the click of a button, families can enjoy top–of-the-line movies at home without ever leaving their living room. But, the same doesn’t apply to Bollywood. Three Telugu films – Bimbisara, Sita Ramam, and Karthikeya 2 – garnered huge box office success in August by generating a revenue between Rs. 150–170 crores. It’s a mysterious paradox since this isn’t exclusive to movie fanatics in South India; it’s an unsettling trend for all film industries.“
Despite the delay in Liger’s release, she was resolute in having a theatrical debut. She attributed this to a sense of duty to allow films such as RRR and Pushpa: The Rise to come out first. Furthermore, despite various difficulties encountered throughout the pandemic and beyond, her enthusiasm for seeing Liger succeed never faltered. She shared: “We began pre–production for Liger back in 2019 and met Karan Johar then. However it has taken until 2022 to see its eventual release! We have weathered multiple lockdowns and third waves of Covid but felt strongly that cinemas should be the platform of choice. It’s been a tumultuous three years with continual roadblocks but our spirits remain unbowed.“
On August 25th, Vijay Deverakonda’s much–anticipated Bollywood debut, Liger, made its pan-India splash under the direction of Puri Jagannadh. This film saw Ananya Panday in her first major project outside of Hindi, and was simultaneously released across five languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
