रामायण की कहानी: लक्ष्मण जी नहीं सोए 14 साल
रामचंद्र जी को जब उनके पिता दशरथ राजपाट सौंपने वाले थे, तभी उनकी दूसरी पत्नी कैकेयी को उनकी दासी मथंरा ने खूब भड़काया। मंथरा ने कहा कि राजा तो आपके बेटे भरत को बनना चाहिए। इसके बाद कैकेयी ने राजा दशरथ से दो वर मांगे, पहला भरत को गद्दी मिलनी चाहिए और दूसरा राम को 14 वर्ष तक वन में रहना होगा। राजा दशरथ को अपनी पत्नी के वर पूरे करने पड़े।

जब रामचंद्र जी वनवास के लिए अयोध्या से निकले, तब लक्ष्मण जी ने भी उनके साथ जाने की इच्छा जाहिर की। लक्ष्मण के वन जाने की बात सुनकर उनकी पत्नी उर्मिला भी साथ जाने की जिद करने लगती है। तब लक्ष्मण अपनी पत्नी उर्मिला को समझाते हैं कि वह अपने बड़े भाई और मां समान भाभी सीता की सेवा करने के लिए जा रहे हैं। अगर तुम वनवास में साथ चलोगी, तो मैं ठीक तरह से सेवा नहीं कर पाऊंगा। लक्ष्मण के सेवा भाव को देखकर उर्मिला साथ जाने की जिद छोड़ देती है और महल में ही रुक जाती है।

वन में पहुंचकर लक्ष्मण, भगवान राम और सीता के लिए एक कुटिया बनाते हैं। जब राम और सीता कुटिया में विश्राम करते थे, तब लक्ष्मण बाहर पहरेदारी करते थे। वनवास के पहले दिन जब लक्ष्मण पहरेदारी कर रहे थे, तब उनके सामने निद्रा देवी प्रकट हुईं। लक्ष्मण ने निद्रा देवी से वरदान मांगा कि वह 14 साल तक निद्रा मुक्त रहना चाहते हैं। निद्रा देवी ने कहा कि तुम्हारे हिस्से की नींद किसी और को लेनी होगी। लक्ष्मण कहते हैं कि उनके हिस्से की नींद उनकी पत्नी को दे दें। इस कारण लक्ष्मण 14 साल तक नहीं सोए और उनकी पत्नी उर्मिला लगातार 14 वर्ष तक सोती रही।

14 वर्ष बाद जब भगवान राम और माता सीता के साथ जब लक्ष्मण अयोध्या वापस आए, तब नींद की अवस्था में रामचंद्र जी के राजतिलक समारोह में उर्मिला भी उपस्थित थी। यह देख लक्ष्मण को हंसी आती है। जब लक्ष्मण से हंसी की वजह पूछी गई, तो उन्होंने निद्रा देवी के वरदान के बारे में सब कुछ बताया। लक्ष्मण ने कहा कि जब मैं उबासी लूंगा, तब उर्मिला की नींद खुलेगी। लक्ष्मण जी की इस बात को सुनकर सभा में मौजूद सभी हंस पड़े। सभी को हंसते देख उर्मिला लज्जावश समारोह से उठकर बाहर चली जाती हैं।

Seeing Laxman’s service, Urmila gives up her insistence to go with him and stays in the palace.

On reaching the forest, Lakshmana builds a hut for Lord Rama and Sita. When Rama and Sita rested in the hut, Lakshmana stood guard outside. On the first day of exile, when Laxman was guarding, Nidra Devi appeared in front of him. Laxman sought a boon from Nidra Devi that he wanted to remain sleepless for 14 years. Nidra Devi said that someone else will have to take your share of sleep. Laxman says to give his share of sleep to his wife. Because of this Laxman did not sleep for 14 years and his wife Urmila continued to sleep for 14 years.

After 14 years, when Lakshman returned to Ayodhya with Lord Rama and Mother Sita, Urmila was also present at the coronation ceremony of Ramchandra ji in a state of sleep. Laxman laughs seeing this. When Lakshmana was asked the reason for the laughter, he told everything about the boon of Nidra Devi. Laxman said that when I yawn, then Urmila’s sleep will open. Everyone present in the gathering laughed after hearing this statement of Laxman ji. Seeing everyone laughing, Urmila gets up and walks out of the ceremony in shame.
