Yesterday marked the grand release of the much awaited Aamir Khan–Kareena Kapoor starrer Laal Singh Chaddha, directed by Advait Chandan, a remake of the iconic Tom Hanks movie Forrest Gump. Contrary to the expected positive response, the film commenced with a quite low turnout of only 15% occupancy rate in the morning and early afternoon shows. Making the situation worse were the unenthusiastic reviews the film has been garnering. With this situation in hand, it seems that Laal Sinch Chaddha may be a tough journey for its makers.
In this box office report, we take a look at Laal Singh Chaddha’s opening day collections, comparing them to Aamir Khan’s earlier movies. On the first day, the film earned Rs. 12 cr, a figure which fails to match the success of Aamir’s two prior releases Talaash and 3 Idiots which both collected Rs. 13.50 cr and Rs. 12.78 cr respectively. Additionally, Laal Singh Chaddha falls short of the record held by other Khan movies such as Thugs of Hindostan, Dhoom 3, Dangal, and PK – which earned Rs. 52.25 cr, Rs. 36.22 cr, Rs. 29.78 cr, and Rs. 26.63 cr respectively. However, Laal Singh Chaddha does manage to overtake the opening day collections of Secret Superstar, Fanaa, and Mangal Pandey – The Rising, which made Rs. 4.80 cr, Rs. 3.96 cr, and Rs. 3.24 cr respectively.
Currently, Laal Singh Chaddha is experiencing massive issues at the box office, with many opting to stay away from cinemas; shows have been cancelled due to lack of occupancy. Reportedly, Laal Singh Chaddha has seen a considerable decline in occupancy on its second day of screening, possibly due to the competitive release of Raksha Bandhan, along with mixed critical reviews.
Trade predictions still remain upbeat with regards to the collections of Laal Singh Chaddha during the extended festive weekend and on the Independence Day holiday Monday. Despite this, industry reports caution that the increase in business will be quite miniscule.
