उस समय रावण की पत्नी मंदोदरी उस कलश को लेकर बहुत उत्सुक थी। एक दिन जब रावण महल में नहीं था तब मंदोदरी ने उस कलश को खोलकर देखा। मंदोदरी कलश को उठाकर उसमें रखा हुआ रक्त पी गईं जिससे वह गर्भवती हो गई।

मंदोदरी का यह भेद किसी को पता ना चले इसलिए वह लंका से बहुत दूर अपनी पुत्री को कलश में छुपाकर मिथिला भूमि में छोड़ आई। इस प्रकार सीता जी का जन्म हुआ और वो रावण की पुत्री होने के साथ उनकी मृत्यु का कारण भी बनीं।
