Kolkata Knight Riders have been led by eight different captains in the IPL, with Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer steering the franchise to its three title wins in 2012, 2014 and 2024. Sourav Ganguly was the first captain, while Ajinkya Rahane led the side in 2025 and remained listed as captain in the team profile covering the 2026 season. KKR’s captaincy history reflects the franchise’s journey from difficult early campaigns to becoming three-time champions.

The list includes full-time captains as well as players who stepped in when a change was made during a season or an appointed captain was unavailable. In franchise cricket, that distinction matters: a player may be the named captain before a season but not lead every match.

Sourav Ganguly and Brendon McCullum: the early years

Sourav Ganguly was Kolkata Knight Riders’ first captain after the franchise entered the IPL in 2008. The combination of a Kolkata-based side and one of Indian cricket’s most recognisable leaders created considerable expectations. KKR opened the inaugural IPL with a major win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, powered by Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 158, but the season ended with the team in sixth place.

KKR finished eighth in 2009 and sixth in 2010. According to ESPNcricinfo’s season-by-season account, Ganguly was retained as captain in 2010 and scored 493 runs, but the team narrowly missed a playoff place on net run rate despite finishing level on 14 points with the sides placed third, fourth and fifth. The early seasons did not produce a playoff campaign, but they established KKR’s profile in the league.

McCullum also captained KKR during the franchise’s first three IPL seasons. ESPNcricinfo describes the initial phase as one in which the side was led first by Ganguly and then by McCullum. Their captaincy periods came before KKR’s first sustained success, which began after the leadership change in 2011.

    Gautam Gambhir: KKR’s defining captain

Gautam Gambhir transformed KKR’s results after taking charge in 2011. That season, the side reached the playoffs for the first time and finished fourth. ESPNcricinfo credits a new-look team, with Gambhir as captain and several Indian players contributing match-winning performances, for changing the franchise’s fortunes.

The breakthrough arrived in 2012. KKR won 12 of 17 matches, a win percentage of 70.5, and lifted their first IPL trophy. They finished second in the league phase and defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final while chasing 191. Manvinder Bisla’s 89 was central to the chase, but the title was the clearest early statement of Gambhir’s captaincy era.

Gambhir led KKR to a second title in 2014. The campaign began poorly, with five defeats in the first seven games, before the team produced a nine-match winning streak to claim the championship. KKR won 11 of 16 matches that season, with a win percentage of 68.7. In the final, Manish Pandey made 94 as KKR chased 200 against Kings XI Punjab.

Across his KKR career, Gambhir captained in all 122 of his matches for the franchise, according to ESPNcricinfo. He also finished as KKR’s all-time leading run-scorer with 3,345 runs. His captaincy combined consistency at the top of the order with a side built around contributors such as Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan and later Andre Russell.

Dinesh Karthik: a playoff return in 2018

Dinesh Karthik became captain after Gambhir was not retained ahead of the 2018 auction. His first season brought an immediate return to the higher positions in the table: KKR finished third, won nine of 16 matches and reached the second qualifier. Karthik was also the team’s leading run-scorer in that season with 498 runs.

The 2018 campaign showed a different KKR approach. The side used the power of Chris Lynn, Narine and Russell to post big scores, while Karthik often batted lower down the order. KKR beat Rajasthan Royals in the eliminator before losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad, who went on to finish runners-up.

Karthik’s captaincy period ran from 2018 to 2020, and ESPNcricinfo’s individual captains list records 37 KKR Twenty20 matches under his leadership. KKR finished fifth in 2019 after losing six consecutive matches following four wins in their first five games. In 2020, Karthik stepped down midway through the IPL season.

Eoin Morgan and the 2021 final

Eoin Morgan took over the captaincy after seven matches of the 2020 IPL. KKR finished fifth that year with seven wins from 14 matches. Although the team’s final table position was close to the playoff places, it did not build sustained momentum during the campaign.

Morgan’s more memorable season as KKR captain was 2021. KKR won nine of 17 matches and reached the final, their third IPL final overall. The team’s form improved substantially in the UAE leg of the tournament, where it won seven of nine games. Sunil Narine regained form with the ball, while Venkatesh Iyer emerged as an important player.

KKR finished runners-up in 2021 after losing the final. Morgan’s KKR captaincy covered 24 Twenty20 matches across 2020 and 2021, according to ESPNcricinfo’s captains record. He was not retained through the 2022 transition, when the franchise appointed a new long-term leader.

Shreyas Iyer and the 2024 championship

Shreyas Iyer became KKR captain in 2022. The first season ended in seventh place, with six wins from 14 matches. In 2023, an injury ruled Iyer out and Nitish Rana took over the captaincy. KKR again finished seventh, also with six wins from 14 matches.

Rana led KKR in 14 Twenty20 matches during 2023, according to ESPNcricinfo. His season included Rinku Singh’s extraordinary finish against Gujarat Titans, when Rinku struck five sixes in the final over while KKR needed 29 runs to win. Rana’s role was a temporary but significant chapter in the team’s captaincy story.

Iyer returned for 2024 and led KKR to their third IPL title. It was the franchise’s most dominant title-winning season by the available season record: KKR won 11 of 15 matches, finished top of the league table and lost only three matches all season. They beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in Qualifier 1 and repeated the same margin in the final.

Iyer captained KKR in 29 Twenty20 matches across 2022 to 2024, according to ESPNcricinfo’s captaincy listing. The 2024 triumph placed him alongside Gambhir as a title-winning KKR captain, while also ending a decade-long wait for the franchise’s next championship.

    Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership phase

KKR announced Ajinkya Rahane as captain for the 2025 TATA Indian Premier League on 3 March 2025, with Venkatesh Iyer named vice-captain. The appointment followed KKR’s 2024 title win and represented another change in leadership after Iyer’s departure from the franchise setup.

The 2025 season was difficult for the defending champions. KKR finished eighth, winning five of 14 matches, with two no-results also affecting their campaign. ESPNcricinfo noted that the side’s middle order, a major strength during the 2024 title run, struggled to find momentum.

In 2026, KKR finished seventh with six wins from 14 matches. They remained in playoff contention until the final day of the league stage but had left themselves too much to do after their first win came only in the seventh game. ESPNcricinfo’s KKR team profile lists Rahane as captain and Abhishek Nayar as coach.

    What KKR’s captaincy record shows

KKR’s strongest periods have come when captaincy stability aligned with a settled core of players. Gambhir’s seven-season spell delivered two trophies and the franchise’s first playoff qualification. Iyer’s return in 2024 brought a third title in one of KKR’s most commanding seasons. Shorter leadership spells under Karthik and Morgan still produced notable playoff runs, while Rana ensured continuity in 2023.

From Ganguly’s first season to Rahane’s latest leadership phase, KKR have used captaincy changes to respond to changing squads and circumstances. Their history shows that individual captaincy records matter, but the most successful periods have also depended on a balanced side making decisive contributions across a full IPL season.
