हनुमानजी को राम का सबसे बड़ा भक्त माना जाता है। हनुमान सर्वशक्तिमान और सर्वज्ञ हैं। हनुमान के बगैर न तो राम हैं और न रामायण। कहते हैं कि दुनिया चले न श्रीराम के बिना और रामजी चले न हनुमान के बिना।
जब रावण पंचवटी से माता सीता का अपहरण कर श्रीलंका ले उड़ा, तब राम और लक्ष्मण जंगलों की खाक छानते हुए माता सीता की खोज कर रहे थे। ऐसे कई मौके आए, जब उनको हताशा और निराशा हाथ लगी।
इस दौरान कई घटनाएं घटीं। एक और जहां सीता की खोज में राम वन-वन भटक रहे थे तो दूसरी और किष्किंधा के दो वानरराज भाइयों बाली और सुग्रीव के बीच युद्ध हुआ और सुग्रीव को भागकर ऋष्यमूक पर्वत की एक गुफा में छिपना पड़ा। इस क्षेत्र में ही एक अंजनी पर्वत पर हनुमान के पिता का भी राज था, जहां हनुमानजी रहते थे।

ऋष्यमूक पर्वत वाल्मीकि रामायण में वर्णित वानरों की राजधानी किष्किंधा के निकट स्थित था। यहां की एक गुफा में सुग्रीव अपने मंत्रियों और विश्वस्त वानरों के साथ रहता था। राम और लक्ष्मण सीता की खोज करते हुए इस पर्वत पर पहुंच गए।
आगें चले बहुरि रघुराया। रिष्यमूक पर्बत निअराया॥
तहँ रह सचिव सहित सुग्रीवा। आवत देखि अतुल बल सींवा॥1॥
जानिये कैसे हुआ हनुमान जी का जन्म : हनुमान जन्म कथा
भावार्थ : श्री रघुनाथजी फिर आगे चले। ऋष्यमूक पर्वत निकट आ गया। वहां (ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर) मंत्रियों सहित सुग्रीव रहते थे। अतुलनीय बल की सीमा श्री रामचंद्रजी और लक्ष्मणजी को आते देखकर- भयभित हो गए॥1॥- रामचरित मानस (किष्किंधा कांड)
जब सुग्रीव ने राम और लक्ष्मण को देखा तो वह भयभीत हो गया। इतने बलशाली और तेजस्वीवान मनुष्य उसने कभी नहीं देखे थे। वह भागते हुए हनुमान के पास गया और कहने लगा कि हमारी जान को खतरा है। सुग्रीव को लग रहा था कि कहीं यह बाली के भेजे हुए तो नहीं हैं।
सुग्रीव ने हनुमानजी से कहा कि तुम ब्रह्मचारी का रूप धारण करके उनके समक्ष जाओ और उसके हृदय की बात जानकर मुझे इशारे से बताओ। यदि वे सुग्रीव के भेजे हुए हैं तो मैं तुरंत ही यहां से कहीं ओर भाग जाऊंगा।
कैसे हुई माँ गंगा की उत्पत्ति जानिए इस कथा के माध्यम से: गंगा की उत्पत्ति कथा
बाली-सुग्रीव का किष्किंधा राज्य : तुंगभद्रा नदी दक्षिण भारतीय प्रायद्वीप की एक पवित्र नदी है, जो कर्नाटक तथा आंध्रप्रदेश में बहती है। यह नदी छत्तीसगढ़ के रायपुर के निकट कृष्णा नदी में मिल जाती है। प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्थल हम्पी तुंगभद्रा नदी के दक्षिणी किनारे पर स्थित है। इस नदी का जन्म तुंगा और भद्रा नदियों के मिलन से होता है, जो इसे तुंगभद्रा नदी का नाम देती है। उद्गम का स्थान गंगामूल कहलाता है, जो श्रृंगगिरि या वराह पर्वत के अंतर्गत है।
जहां से तुंगभद्रा नदी धनुष के आकार में बहती है वहीं पर ऋष्यमूक पर्वत है और उसी से मील दूर किष्किंधा का क्षेत्र शुरू होता है। इस पर्वत के नजदीक ही कर्नाटक का प्रसिद्ध शिव का मंदिर विरुपाक्ष मंदिर है, जो हम्पी के अंतर्गत आता है। यह आज के बेल्लारी जिले में स्थित है। यहां से गोवा पश्चिम-उत्तर में उतनी ही दूर है जितनी दूर तुंगभद्रा का उद्गम स्थान। गंगामूल से गंगावती और गंगावती से गोवा। गंगावती के पास ही किष्किंधा राज्य था, जो कर्नाटक और आंध्रप्रदेश की सीमा पर स्थित है
सुग्रीव की बातें सुनकर हनुमानजी ब्राह्मण का रूप धरकर वहां गए और मस्तक नवाकर विनम्रता से राम और लक्ष्मण से पूछने लगे। हे वीर! सांवले और गोरे शरीर वाले आप कौन हैं, जो क्षत्रिय के रूप में वन में फिर रहे हैं? हे स्वामी! कठोर भूमि पर कोमल चरणों से चलने वाले आप किस कारण वन में विचर रहे हैं?

हनुमान ने आगे कहा- मन को हरण करने वाले आपके सुंदर, कोमल अंग हैं और आप वन की दुःसह धूप और वायु को सह रहे हैं। क्या आप ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश- इन तीन देवताओं में से कोई हैं या आप दोनों नर और नारायण हैं?
श्रीरामचंद्रजी ने कहा- हम कोसलराज दशरथजी के पुत्र हैं और पिता का वचन मानकर वन आए हैं। हमारे राम-लक्ष्मण नाम हैं, हम दोनों भाई हैं। हमारे साथ सुंदर सुकुमारी स्त्री थी। यहां (वन में) राक्षस ने मेरी पत्नी जानकी को हर लिया। हे ब्राह्मण! हम उसे ही खोजते फिरते हैं। हमने तो अपना चरित्र कह सुनाया। अब हे ब्राह्मण! आप अपनी कथा कहिए, आप कौन हैं?
प्रभु को पहचानकर हनुमानजी उनके चरण पकड़कर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े। उन्होंने साष्टांग दंडवत प्रणाम कर स्तुति की। अपने नाथ को पहचान लेने से हृदय में हर्ष हो रहा है। फिर हनुमानजी ने कहा- हे स्वामी! मैंने जो पूछा वह मेरा पूछना तो न्याय था, वर्षों के बाद आपको देखा, वह भी तपस्वी के वेष में और मेरी वानरी बुद्धि… इससे मैं तो आपको पहचान न सका और अपनी परिस्थिति के अनुसार मैंने आपसे पूछा, परंतु आप मनुष्य की तरह कैसे पूछ रहे हैं? मैं तो आपकी माया के वश भूला फिरता हूं। इसी से मैंने अपने स्वामी (आप) को नहीं पहचाना, किंतु आप तो अंतरयामी हैं।
ऐसा कहकर हनुमानजी अकुलाकर प्रभु के चरणों पर गिर पड़े। उन्होंने अपना असली शरीर प्रकट कर दिया। उनके हृदय में प्रेम छा गया, तब श्री रघुनाथजी ने उन्हें उठाकर हृदय से लगा लिया और अपने नेत्रों के जल से सींचकर शीतल किया। -रामचरित मानस

How Lord Ram and Hanuman met

When Sugriva saw Rama and Lakshmana, he was horrified. He had never seen such a strong and bright man. He ran to Hanuman and started saying that our life is in danger. Sugriva was thinking that he might not have been sent by Bali.
Sugriva told Hanumanji that you go in front of him in the form of a celibate and after knowing the words of his heart, tell me by gesture. If they are sent by Sugriva, I will immediately run away from here.

Kishkindha Kingdom of Bali-Sugriva: The Tungabhadra River is a sacred river of the South Indian peninsula, which flows through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. This river joins Krishna river near Raipur in Chhattisgarh. The famous tourist destination Hampi is situated on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River. This river is born from the meeting of Tunga and Bhadra rivers, which gives it the name of Tungabhadra river. The place of origin is called Gangamool, which is under Shringagiri or Varaha mountain.
From where the Tungabhadra river flows in the shape of a bow, there is the Rishyamook mountain and the region of Kishkindha begins a mile away from it. Near this mountain is the famous Shiva temple of Karnataka, Virupaksha Temple, which comes under Hampi. It is located in present-day Bellary district. From here Goa is as far away in the west-north as the source of Tungabhadra. Gangamool to Gangavati and Gangavati to Goa. Near Gangavati was the kingdom of Kishkindha, which is situated on the border of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
After listening to the words of Sugriva, Hanumanji went there in the form of a Brahmin and bowing his head humbly started asking Ram and Lakshman. O hero! Who are you with dark and fair body, who are wandering in the forest in the form of a Kshatriya? O lord! Why are you wandering in the forest, walking with soft feet on hard ground?

Hanuman further said – Your beautiful, soft parts are the ones who abduct the mind and you are bearing the sorrowful sun and wind of the forest. Are you Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh – any of these three gods or are you both Nar and Narayan?
Shriramchandraji said – We are the sons of Kosalaraj Dashrathji and have come to the forest by obeying the father’s promise. Our names are Ram-Laxman, we both are brothers. There was a beautiful Sukumari woman with us. Here (in the forest) the demon took away my wife Janaki. Hey Brahmin! We keep searching for him. We told our character. Now O Brahmin! Tell your story, who are you?
Recognizing the Lord, Hanuman ji fell on the earth holding His feet. He prostrated and praised. Recognizing my Nath, there is joy in my heart. Then Hanumanji said – O Lord! What I asked was my right to ask, I saw you after years, that too in the guise of ascetic and my monkey mind… Because of this I could not recognize you and I asked you according to my situation, but you are like a human. How are you asking? I wander under the influence of your illusion. That’s why I didn’t recognize my master (you), but you are antaryami.
By saying this, Hanumanji Akulakar fell at the feet of the Lord. He revealed his real body. Love overflowed in his heart, then Shri Raghunathji picked him up and hugged him and cooled him down by irrigating him with the water of his eyes. –Ramcharit Manas.

Ram hugged Hanuman to his heart and said – O monkey! Listen, don’t feel guilty. You are dearer to me than Laxman. Everyone calls me equanimous (beyond loving-displeasing), but I love the servant, because he has no other support except me.
