Yesterday Ranveer Singh starred in the blockbuster Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Released across over 2,250 theaters domestically, with high expectations but less-than-stellar reviews, the film failed to attract viewers and ended up having dismal box office numbers. Stuck at 9th place on last year’s chart for opening day collections (with only 3.25 crores,) Jeyshebhai Jordaar underperformed both past hits like Attack – Part One (3 crores) and released disappointments like The Kashmir Files (3.5 crores).
But despite lagging behind these benchmarks of success, Jeyshebhai Jordaar’s performance cannot be ignored for two reasons: firstly because those were far bigger movies than what was expected from an independent production starring a relatively unknown actor; and secondly because moviegoers were impressed by its take on controversial Indian issues such as homophobia, gender fluidity etcetera
Leading the list of top-grossing films for this year is K.G.F – Chapter 2 whose movie has collected Rs. 53,950,000 and has been running successfully for four weeks now. RRR holds second position with a total collection of Rs. 205 million and remaining three positions are held by Bachchan Pandey, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Jayeshbhai Jordaar. However, while these movies have done well in terms of first-day earnings they haven’t received that much appreciation from critics or audiences respectively; so it remains to be seen how successful they’ll continue to be in the coming days.
