When wearing my hair in dreadlocks, there are no specific guidelines to follow. There is not a single person who does this style the same way I do – we all do something different and creative with it. You could grow your locks out over time or cut them right away, you could keep them at their current length, or even never cut them at all.
To get started, begin with thoroughly cleaned and shampooed hair. You’ll need to make sure that any product is completely rinsed out (though leaving some oil will also help create dreadlocks faster). Divide your clean hair into sections and install a single braid or twist in each section; again, you can use products if you would like but they’re not required.
Once the sections are braided together, allow your hair to take on its natural shape and reveal its length. If you have chemically relaxed or heated-straightened hair, it may be worth letting it grow out before starting freeform dreadlocks. This will keep long locks from being lost as well as maintaining their original texture!
If you’re considering a long term option, free form dreadlocks are worth your time. They will take longer than other methods to form into the signature dread locks– but once they do, they stay that way for life! As soon as those lovely locks curl together and grow stronger with age, it might be time to tame them down just a bit with some wax or gel.
