4 things that we need to be aware of when working with AI
Over the past 20 years, AI has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for analyzing, creating, predicting, and researching numerous data types, images, or patterns.
Nowadays, it is present not only in complex company systems but also in our social media apps and policing algorithms. However, can we 100% rely on the objectivity of the data AI provides? Let’s examine four important facts we must keep in mind when working with AI.
- AI is as objective as we are.
There is a general belief that new technologies like machine learning and AI are more adept than human decision-making at achieving certain goals or completing tasks due to their perceived “objectivity.” Unfortunately, this belief fails to consider that humans are responsible for developing and training that technology. Moreover, like any other machine, AI systems require human oversight to ensure their proper functionality.
Several academics have shown that achieving neutrality in machine learning and AI is still a distant goal. The algorithms generate predictions based on human input; it is our responsibility to train them. Given that we curate and input this data, it may inherit our biases and prejudices. In this way, our biases and prejudices can unintentionally influence the outcomes, as the algorithms may interpret them as objective values.
This brings us to the second point:
- We need to have a deep understanding of our data to train the algorithms efficiently.
AI is just as imperfect as we are, indicating that its effectiveness is closely linked to the quality and balance of the data used to train it. Therefore, we need to ensure the accuracy and balance of every value of the data in order to avoid biased outcomes, particularly in sensitive applications such as policing algorithms.
For instance, using complex data such as socioeconomic background, neighborhood, and skin tone alongside the number of arrests to predict the chances of individuals getting involved in criminal activity can unintentionally perpetuate racism and class discrimination within the justice system rather than promoting fairness.
- There is no clear line between objectivity and subjectivity.
There is a widely known made-up phrase that “everything happens for a reason.” However, upon closer examination, this notion is not entirely true. For instance, multiple causes often influence events, necessitating an examination of their effects. For this reason, it is important that we exercise caution when utilizing AI.
Algorithms and machine learning can read and analyze numbers, but they cannot understand the underlying reasons behind them. For example, there is no correlation between the neighborhood we were born in, our skin color, and our probability of committing a crime. Thus, assigning the correct weight to every value in our data frame is necessary to avoid bias and ensure a more accurate and fair analysis.
- The ultimate AI development is not always the best option.
Whereas AI is helpful and makes some tasks easier to achieve, it is important to not allow it to dominate the tools we trust. Compared to the past, we have made significant progress in our methods and conceptions. As a result, it is important for AI to undergo human training to reduce the possibility of making misjudgments.
In addition, it is important to note that there is no foolproof algorithm or AI tool that can solve every problem or predict everything with complete accuracy. For instance, the newest technology designed for North American countries might not be the best option to implement in Latin America since it may be influenced by factors such as their unique histories, cultures, economies, and justice systems. Therefore, it is crucial to closely monitor the algorithms’ measurement of these values to ensure they optimize their predictions for the specific time and place of the technology’s use. This will help prevent the reproduction of racist and discriminatory patterns.
Ultimately, human interpretation and AI need to coexist. It is critical that we collaborate with AI for mutual development to enhance positive values and provide equal opportunities for everyone.
