Every year, the film industry produces an enormous number of movies featuring numerous top actors and actresses. However, just a handful of them can truly be classified as audience favourites. Sadly, this rule holds especially true for actresses, as compared to the times when the 90s and early 2000s saw the emergence of several big names in this space. Currently, we can count on one hand the amount of female stars that fill that criteria – and Anushka Sharma is certainly one of them. Turning 33 today, she is discussed in the same breath as the likes of Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt, without a doubt.
Only actress with 3 Rs. 300 crore grossers
Anushka has enjoyed a tremendous track record in the film industry, having been involved in 19 movies, three of which featured major box office success with one of the three Khans – Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman. As a result, three of her movies have become part of the elite Rs. 300 crore club: PK, Sultan and Sanju. Other successful movies, such as Band Baaja Baaraat, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, have made a lasting impression on audiences, with Anushka’s performance in the former in particular being remembered as one of the greatest female performances in recent memory.
First to jump into production; Launchpad for talented newcomers
Not is she acclaimed for her immense success at the box office, but also for a plethora of other reasons. She set the bar high when it came to fashion and style trends and inspired her contemporaries to venture into film production, with her being the first to do so in 2014. Her first production, NH10 (2015), was a gritty thriller, paving the way for her to take part in non–conventional cinema. Her production of the Amazon Prime original, Paatal Lok, earned her numerous praises and is still recognized as one of the most watched Hindi shows of all time, with Jaideep Ahlawat emerging as an overnight sensation.
Anushka Sharmahas distinguished herself by providing up–and–coming talent the opportunity to excel. This is exemplified by Paatal Lok and the Netflix original film, Bulbbul, both of which starred a relatively new actress, Tripti Dimri. Moreover, her upcoming OTT movie, Qala, also features Tripti and is the launchpad for Irrfan Khan’s son Babil. In addition, Anushka has granted the chance for directors such as Prosit Roy, Anshai Lal and Anvita Dutt to display their vision.
